Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says it?s a scandal worse than Watergate ? that the American people ?have flat-out been lied too,? as he put it on Fox News Friday.

Eric Fehrenstrom, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney?s campaign (also speaking on Fox News), says, ?President Obama needs?to be held accountable for his?administration's attempts to?mislead the American people?about what happened in?Benghazi.?

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, has called for the resignation of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice.

Blasphemy riots: 6 examples around the world

The broader theme here (and in many other partisan and conservative blog comments) is that President Obama wasn?t just unaware of the threat in Libya and its violent outcome, but that he and his administration were purposely untruthful about what happened.

The headline on Karl Rove?s column in the Wall Street Journal this week was ?Obama's Biggest Opponent Is the Truth.?

?Every day, it seems, he attempts to disqualify his opponent through deliberate and undeniable falsehoods,? Mr. Rove wrote. ?This is only one side of a two-sided coin. The president can't tell the truth about his own record either.?

In predicting what he?ll be dealing with in his upcoming debates with Obama, Mr. Romney himself told ?Good Morning America? earlier this month, "I think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate."

The essence of the charge about Libya by Republicans is that the administration purposely tried to downplay the incident by asserting that the attack was spontaneous, prompted by riots tied to the anti-Islam YouTube video that set off protests in Egypt, Libya, and many other Muslim countries across North Africa and the Middle East.

In the days following the attack, Ambassador Rice (and others in the administration) left the impression that the attackers took advantage of the riot to quickly gather weapons and target the relatively defenseless consulate.

Only later did administration officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, acknowledge that ?terrorists? ? some with possible ties (or at least supported by) Al Qaeda ? likely were involved.

Simon Cowell And Will.i.am Are Teaming Up To Create An X Factor To Find The Next Mark Zuckerberg

Simon Cowell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaSimon Cowell is on the hunt for the next Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates. According to The Sun, the former American Idol and current X Factor judge is teaming up with Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am to find the next hot tech entrepreneur. Details are sparse on when the show will debut and the exact format, but if the tech-focused show is anything like X Factor, it sounds like would-be entrepreneurs will be pitching their ideas to an all-star panel of judges. It also appears that the show will be based in the UK.

Immunologists find a molecule that puts the brakes on inflammation

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? We couldn't live without our immune systems, always tuned to detect and eradicate invading pathogens and particles. But sometimes the immune response goes overboard, triggering autoimmune diseases like lupus, asthma or inflammatory bowel disease.

A new study led by University of Pennsylvania researchers has now identified a crucial signaling molecule involved in counterbalancing the immune system attack.

"The immune response is like driving a car," said Christopher Hunter, professor and chair in the Department of Pathobiology in Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine. "You hit the accelerator and develop this response that's required to protect you from a pathogen, but, unless you have a brake to guide the response, then you'll just careen off the road and die because you can't control the speed of the response."

The research to characterize this immune system "brake" was led by Hunter and Aisling O'Hara Hall, a doctoral candidate in the Immunology Graduate Group. Additional Penn collaborators included scientists from the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute's Department of Biology and the Perelman School of Medicine's Department of Medicine. Researchers from Merck Research Laboratories, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Harvard Medical School and Janssen Research and Development also contributed to the work, which was published in the journal Immunity.

"Healthy people have these cells -- you have them, I have them -- that are called Tregs," or regulatory T cells, Hunter said. "If you don't have them you develop spontaneous inflammation and disease."

Different forms of regulatory T cells operate as the brakes on various kinds of inflammation, but, until now, scientists hadn't been certain of how these Tregs became specialized to do their particular jobs.

Hall, Hunter and colleagues decided to follow up on a molecule called IL-27. Scientists used to think IL-27 played a role in causing inflammation, but, in 2005, a team of Penn researchers, including Hunter, found the opposite; it was actually involved in suppressing inflammation. Thus, when mice that lack IL-27 are challenged with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, they develop overwhelming inflammation.

"We never worked out how it did that, but it was a paradigm change at the time," Hunter said.

In the new study, the researchers delved deeper into IL-27's role. They found that exposing regulatory T cells to IL-27 promoted their ability to suppress a particular type of inflammation. The Penn-led team also demonstrated that they could rescue infected IL-27-deficient mice by giving them a transfusion of regulatory T cells. This finding suggests that IL-27 is required to produce the Treg cells that normally keep inflammatory responses in check during infection.

"Very surprisingly, we were able to show that the Tregs could ameliorate the pathology in this system," Hall said. "We don't think this is the only mechanism by which IL-27 limits immune pathology, but it sheds light on one mechanism by which it could be functioning."

Further experiments showed that Tregs express a different suite of genes in the presence of IL-27 as compared to another molecule that has been implicated in this process, interferon gamma, or IFN-?. The researchers' findings indicate that the two molecules have division of labor when it comes to suppressing inflammation: IL-27 seems to be important in helping control inflammation at the site of inflammation, whereas IFN-? appears more significant in the peripheral tissues.

"At the site of inflammation, where you're getting your pathology, that's where IL- 27 is important," Hall said.

With a new understanding of how IL-27 may cause a class of Tregs to become specialized inflammation fighters, researchers have a new target for ameliorating the unwanted inflammation associated with all kinds of autoimmune conditions.

"Now we have a molecular signature that may be relevant in inflammatory bowel disease, in multiple sclerosis, in colitis and Crohn's disease, in rheumatoid arthritis, in lupus," Hunter said.

Next on tap, the team plans to study IL-27 in the context of asthma, lupus and arthritis.

In addition to Hall and Hunter, the authors included Beena John, Claudia Gonz?lez Lombana, Gretchen Harms Pritchard, Jonathan S. Silver, Jason S. Stumhofer, Tajie H. Harris, Elia D. Tait Wojno, Sagie Wagage and Philip Scott of Penn Vet's Department of Pathobiology; Daniel P. Beiting, David S. Roos and Sara Cheery of the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute Department of Biology; Steven Reiner, formerly of the Penn Department of Medicine; Cristina M. Tato and Daniel Cua of Merck Research Laboratories; Yasmine Belkaid, Guillaume Oldenhove, Nicolas Bouladoux and John Grainger of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease; Laurence A. Turka of Harvard Medical School; and M. Merle Elloso of Janssen Research and Development.

The study was supported by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Institutes of Health.

Water on Mars: NASA scientists are 'excited'

Mars rover Curiosity found rocks on the Martian surface that are too big to be carried by wind, so researchers suppose water must have existed on Mars at one time. Over the next two years, Curiosity will continue its search for signs of ancient?microbial life on Mars.

The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on?Mars?? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of?Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day?Mars?is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

5 Bills That Won't Rebuild Credit After Bankruptcy | Credit Solutions

reviewing bankruptcy - Quizzle.comIn these difficult economic times, unfortunately, many good people have had no choice but to declare bankruptcy and start over. Bankruptcy, of course, isn?t a permanent condition?eventually, these folks will re-emerge, and when they do, most have roughly the same question: how do I rebuild my credit?

Get the best money tips at Credit Visionary

Building your reports and scores back up is an important part of re-joining the credit community, if you will. The fundamentals are much the same as when you started building credit in the first place?you need to prove your creditworthiness and reliability as a borrower. This largely means paying various bills on time, or repaying any outstanding loans on schedule.

But you might be surprised which bills don?t really help you rebuild credit.

Today, Quizzologists are focusing on accounts that you may very well need, but which won?t play a big part in restoring your credit to health.

Among these not-very-helpful bills:

Rent: You need to live somewhere, sure, but the mere act of paying your rent won?t help you. Conversely, however, failure to pay can result in actions in small claims court, and collections agencies can be put on the job of recouping what?s owed. This can cause major problems for your ability to rent apartments or houses in the future.

Medical Bills: If you don?t have your health, what do you have? Well, not much, but paying off these bills won?t improve the health of your credit. The monthly payment you make won?t get reported to the credit bureaus?but failing to keep up with your schedule, most times, will be.

Cell Phones: Another item you may have to pay for, but don?t expect any reward for doing so on time, it won?t get reported. While being a little late shouldn?t hurt you too bad, if you start to go 30 to 60 days delinquent, you?re heading back into the kind of trouble you just got out of.

Utilities: Keeping the lights and stove on, (like keeping a phone in service), are viewed as basic necessities, not great opportunities to demonstrate your renewed ability to borrow and pay back loans to future creditors. By all means, let there be light, but it won?t rebuild your score.

Federal/State Tax Liens: Staying on Uncle Sam?s good side is important, no doubt, but if you?ve had a lien placed against you, it won?t drop off your reports and scores until it?s fully satisfied. So, alas, no bonus brownie points for getting right with the government.

If you?ve declared bankruptcy, these kinds of bills and accounts won?t give you any extra opportunities to rebuild your battered scores. The (semi-) good news: you?re not alone. With the glut of bankruptcies in recent years, many companies are finding themselves having to be more forgiving and flexible in terms of who they choose to do business with.

Another helpful ally in this process is your bank. Ask them what lines of credit they might extend that you can grab hold of to help lift you out of your bankruptcy rut.

Are you looking to re-join the ranks of the good credit world? How can Quizzle help? Find out.

Shropshire insurance brokers offer flood damage advice ...

Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said the unprecedented wet weather had led to many homes being affected by flood water for the very first time.

?You may find your property is hit this year when you?ve never experienced any problems previously, and it?s vital that you don?t wade straight in without taking proper precautions.

?There may be hidden dangers in the flood water like sharp objects and raised manhole covers, and it may also contain sewage, chemicals and animal waste, so you must wear waterproof clothing, gloves, boots and a face mask.

?You need to bear in mind too that your electricity supply may still be switched on ? if so, don?t touch anything until a qualified person has been called to switch everything off at the mains.?

Dave said it was important to only start pumping water out of your property once the flood levels outside were lower than inside, to reduce the risk of structural damage.

?Ordinary household products are fine for cleaning and disinfecting your property, and a garden hose is useful for washing everything down, but don?t use high pressure hoses as they will blast contaminated matter into the air.?

Dave said householders should also ring their buildings and insurance company as soon as possible, as in almost all cases they will want to send a loss adjuster to look at the property.

?You should ask how long it will be before the loss adjuster visits, and whether you should clean the property yourself or if they will get a company in to do it for you. And always make your own record of flood damage by using a permanent ink pen to mark on the wall where the water has come to, and photograph or video your damaged property.

?If you don?t have insurance, your local council should be able to provide information on grants or charities that may be able to help you.?

Dave said flood repairs could take weeks or months to complete, especially if there had been widespread flooding and builders were overwhelmed with repair work.

?Ask your insurance company or landlord if they will provide you with temporary accommodation, but bear in mind that if many people are affected, your choices may be limited.?

Schumacher Homes New Home Builder New Home Design Trends

Schumacher_basement_excavationWell, it?s about time ? new construction housing starts are on the rise! ?And, MORE good news ? interest rates are DOWN and no prediction is seen for the rates to climb! ??In fact, the rates are at an all-time low, according to Mortgage News Daily. ?If you?ve been longing to build the home of your dreams, these, and other sources, indicate that now is the time!

Here are some suggestions on the current concepts in new home design. ?Browse through these trends and see if any are on the list of must-have features for your brand-new home:

Outdoor living spaces ? private porches, patios, and decks that complement the outdoors are hot, hot, HOT, not just in the warmer climates, but also in the cooler regions.? Imagine relaxing with a good book while listening to the birds chirping at the feeder; what a great stress reliever!

Open floor plans ? once limited to specific locations and segments of the market, nearly every home buyer survey indicates that flexible, open spaces featuring natural light are tops on the list.? The open layout and large windows create the spacious effect even in more modest-sized homes.

Moderately sized homes ? speaking of modest sized homes, a growing number of homeowners are rejecting the McMansion tendency, opting for homes in the 2,500 ? 3,500 square foot range; ?buyers are preferring meduim-sized homes that they can furnish and decorate to the hilt.

Over-sized garages ? the over-sized garage?is high on the list of amenities for home buyers; studies have found that Americans own 2.28 vehicles per household. ? The extra area provides storage for bicycles, garden tools, and other items.

Multi-generational living ? more than ever before, families are opting to combine under one household:? baby boomers are cohabiting with parents; millennials leaving college and finding challenges in the job market while paying student loans are choosing to reside with parents while building up funds to establish homes of their own.?? The need for privacy for three-generation households?has resulted in homes with in-law suites and bonus rooms.

The kitchen dilemma ? the kitchen is absolutely the heart of the home; as square footages are reduced, innovation in kitchen design becomes critical.? Natural lighting is necessary to provide the room with a spacious, open feel; to maintain storage without incurring clutter, more designers are turning to walk-in pantries, often nicknamed ?Costco closets?, for efficient organization.

How did your list of new home building non-negotiable features align with the above trends? ?It doesn?t really matter; what is important is that the home you choose meets the needs of your family. ?Why not stop by our nearest Design Center for a custom quote on your dream home? ?You?ll be surprised at how easy it will be to live in what you love. Non Recourse Loan, Commercial Mortgages from Clopton Capital ...

(PRWEB) August 21, 2012

Clopton Capital, a commercial real estate finance firm that offers commercial mortgages and loans for income producing properties nationwide, announces the opportunity for commercial real estate owners and operators to lock in historically low interest rates for non-recourse loans.

Over the past couple weeks, treasury rates have dipped to extremely low levels that are offering borrowers the opportunity to refinance and acquire commercial real estate at extremely low rates for non recourse loans. Non recourse loans are based off of treasury rates, so the lower the treasury rates go, the lower the rates go as long as the spread charged to borrowers doesnt change. Eligible property types would include multifamily, office, retail centers, hospitality, and industrial properties. We are looking to provide financing for a diverse range of property types. Loan amounts range from $ 1 million up to as high as $ 50 million and we are seeing rates dip into the low 4%s for strong properties, says Jake Clopton, founder. The best way to learn more about these loan options is to contact a loan officer by calling 866-647-1650.

Clopton Capital ranks as one of the most active and dynamic commercial real estate finance firms providing lending options nationwide for income producing properties. Offering commercial mortgages, construction loans, bridge loans, and CMBS loans to borrowers for a diverse range of property types and ownership structures, Clopton Capital has the capability to meet almost any lending needs of property owners and managers.

Harvest Moon by Hand: Favorite Pets

I have been happy to have had a variety of pets as an adult - dogs, cats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.?Out of all the pets I felt the greatest connection to, though, it had to be Casey.?

Pictures of Casey with Sophia, Olivia, and Montague.

(Collage created on February 14, 2008.)

Casey was ?adopted from a humane society, and was one of several puppies in a litter.?When I went to look at them, she came right to me. I liked the distinctive white mark on her chest. It stood out against her black fur.

For the first few months of her life, she lived in Minneapolis. Then, she became a farm dog. As livestock was added to the farm, she was equally intrigued and amused by the animals - sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.

She was an incredibly gentle dog and none of the poultry, lambs, sheep, or horses felt threatened by her. In fact, mother sheep would allow Casey to get close to their newborn lambs.?

When I was offering a children's camp, many of the children who lived in the inner-city were frightened of dogs, particularly large dogs. At 60+ pounds, Casey probably looked very scary to them.

Yet, the children who were fearful of her at the beginning of the camp week, were hugging her when the camp program ended at the end of the week. Truly, she had changed their attitudes and helped them overcome their fear of dogs in only a few days.

Casey died when she was 12 years old from complications of a twisted stomach. Prior to her death, she began having seizures which was frightening to watch. The only thing I could do was comfort her and be there for her when she came out of the seizures.

That is such a short period of her life...and, by thinking about it, I am not remembering the happier times. So, I think about how she and Sydne (and later Montague) would play and "pretend fight" in the backyard. These dogs - who did not know one another - became close companions. They enjoyed going on walks, exploring the backyard, discovering interesting scents that wildlife left on the nature trail, swimming in the river, and sleeping on the bed next to me.

The current dogs here are Montague and Gretel. They are, likewise, a great team. When Montague was grieving the loss of Casey and wouldn't leave the deck...or would look out the window waiting for her...it was clear he needed someone else.

Montague in the pasture.

He and Casey would run in the pasture together.

They would enjoy finding tracks of rabbits and deer; or?

discovering pheasants who would fly out from the tall grass.

(Taken on September 29, 2007.)

Gretel was adopted from a humane society, and became Montague's life line. He was able to move through his grief thanks to Gretel.?

It has been fun to raise a dog from the puppy stage again. (Sydne and Casey were both adopted as puppies while Montague was adopted as a 1 1/2 year old adult dog.) The humane society thought perhaps Gretel was a German Shepherd-Basset Hound mix. As she has grown up, it looks like she is more of a German Shepherd-Coonhound mix.

Gretel listening.?

One of her favorite toys when she was a puppy is nearby.

(Taken on March 28, 2008.)

She has a goofy personality and is very vocal. I've never heard a dog "talk" as much as Gretel does. She also will rub her head on my arms, legs, back, side...wherever she can wedge herself next me. She does this to others in the family as well...not just me. It's as if she wants us to know we're part of her pack and she's part of ours.

In addition to the dogs, I've had six cats since 1990. I also had one shortly after I graduated from college. I didn't have that cat for long due to behavior issues it had.

The six cats I've had came at different times. There have never been more than five cats at one time in the house. Honestly, that's plenty of cats.

That being said, seeing the personalities of each cat develop from being a kitten to cat has been fun. There are cats who enjoy playing and resting next to one another while others prefer to be rest and spend the majority of their day alone.

Meenie, Eenie, and Lucy sitting together.

(Taken on November 17, 2010.)

Each cat has something distinctive about her/him. Maggie, the solitary cat, prefers to rest quietly either on top of the DirecTV box or heating vent in the floor (both nice warm spots). She sits next to me while I eat and will gently put out her claws and tap me if she sees some food of interest. The only other cat that has done that was Boo (who was adopted in Charlotte, North Carolina).

Maggie playing with different items on the nature table.

(Taken on November 22, 2007.)

Shadow wandered onto the farm (just like Lucy and Maggie). However, he spent the majority of the days sitting on the fallen log in the pasture or in the hobby shed. We would put out food for him so he had something to eat, and would feel more comfortable around us.

As the weather became much colder in the winter, he trusted us enough by that time to allow us to bring him indoors.?After the weather warmed, he wanted to go back outside.

Shadow outdoors in the pasture.

(Taken on?November 1, 2008.)

He stayed outdoors until the following fall, and then wanted to come indoors. He has been an indoor cat since that time. Out of all the cats, Shadow has the most mellow and easy-going personality. He gets along with all the cats, especially Eenie and Lucy who enjoy running around the house together and playing.

In July 2009, we adopted a pony and miniature horse from the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation. Both the pony and horse came from neglect situations, and were quite underweight. Both had not been in pastures - they were in dry lots with limited space to move.

Needless to say, it was a long process to transition their stomachs and bodies from dry alfalfa to pasture grass. To see them at first be confined to the barn and a small area behind the barn - to gradually spending time in the pasture - to seeing them gallop together throughout the pasture has been a joy.

Bailey walking in the pasture through the snow.

What makes Bailey and Hoss' relationship special is that we found out (after they were adopted) that Bailey is blind in her right eye. Her left eye has a pigmentation and other vision issue that potentially could render her completely blind.?

Hoss, despite being only about a third of her size and weight, watches out for his companion. He stays next to her when they go out in the pasture together. When he has to stay out of the pasture (so he doesn't over-consume grass and get sick), he keeps a watchful eye on Bailey. When he can't see her, he will call to her to make sure she's okay.?

(Taken on March 29, 2012.)

The minute he is let out in the pasture, he runs at full speed to her, and eats right next to her. They are inseparable.

The latest addition to the home is Phoenix Star, a hedgehog who was adopted on June 29th. It has been interesting to watch him during the last few months move from the baby-hedgehog stage to the adult-stage as he lost his baby quills and grew permanent ones in. Imagine teething...except all over your body. That's what happened to Phoenix.

Phoenix at about 8 weeks old.

(Taken on June 30, 2012.)

Through adoption, I have seen cats, dogs, horses, livestock, and a hedgehog all live peacefully together. Seeing them grow up and play together is a daily joy for me.

I can't imagine just having one cat...one dog...or one horse. Seeing how important companionship is to the pets here only makes me that much happier that they are part of a pet-filled home, and that each one gets to experience the love, care, and playfulness that another animal can bring to her/his life.

Be Sure to Laugh & Play : National Association of Baby Boomer ...

By Judith Sherven, Ph.D.
NABBW?s Healthy Relationships Expert

Perhaps you?re in a long-term relationship and the joy is gone. You don?t want to be with anyone else but you wish it could be more fun, more exciting.

Do you miss when you were younger and felt more comfortable being silly and playful as a form of real romance? Did you get married and decide you had to act like ?grown-ups? and a lot of the fun went with it? Or have you always thought you needed to be serious in matters of love?

Maybe you?re single and you imagine, like Judith used to, that marriage was a very ?adult? experience and giggles and goofiness had to be left behind.

Well, open your imagination. And, if you?re currently in a relationship, dust off your sense of humor! It?s time to create more romance as you play together more and more and more!

Now, we don?t mean you have to blow bubbles, play hide and seek or skip hop-scotch. We?re talking about making more fun out of your ordinary, everyday life together.

You may be saying, ?No way, it?s kids to feed, bills to pay, laundry to do . . . there?s no time to play around.? Or maybe it?s,?Look, my life is dedicated to providingfor my family, when I get home I?m too tired to try to be funny and act silly.?

But you don?t have to go out of your wayto have a good time.

For instance, just yesterday we got into a lengthy disagreement about a grammar ?problem? in writing our next book. We even made a $5 bet. Then today we spoke with an editor we know and he sided with the positionthat Judith had taken.

Judith: After the call I left my office to go speak with Jim about what had happened. But as I rounded the corner into the hall there was Jim in mock groveling prostrative mea culpa.

Jim: We both laughed and laughed at how wonderfully playful and silly I was! And Judith will get $5 worth of ice cream!

Bringing more humor into your relationship may take new awareness and practice for awhile if you?re not in the habit of playing with one another.

Jim: That was the case for Judith in the beginning of our marriage. She was inclined to take everything seriously and hated being teased.

Judith: But with Jim?s encouragement, I realized it was often easier and more fun to deal with stuff, even some of our conflicts, through humor.

So, remember, if it isn?t life threatening ? a health or safety hazard ? or dangerous to the well-being of your relationship, it?s not thaaaaaat serious.

So, play around more, tease one another with love and affection, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Learning From Kenya: Local Student Shares an Engaged, Educated ...

Hafsa Omar Mohamed visited family in Kenya over the summer and said she was ?inspired by the residents? commitment to education and civic engagement. Click above to see images from her trip.

By Hafsa Omar Mohamed

Hafsa Omar Mohamed was born in Toronto, Canada and now resides in San Diego. Her family is from Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. She is a?student at San Diego State University majoring in Sociology and minoring in Women Studies to become and ?effective advocate for change in my community.? She?currently works and volunteers at Alliance San Diego (Formerly known as Equality Alliance San Diego), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Horn of Africa and American Federation of Teachers. This summer, Mohamed visited Kenya for the first time as an adult. Below is her story.

Kenya is a marvelous and diverse country. The food is amazing and human interaction is authentic. Streets are forever active with people visiting shops, riding buses and selling fresh food. There are huge shopping centers, theme parks, monkey parks, art museums, live street music and everything in between. Believe it or not, there is way more to Kenya than the stereotypical safaris, Maasai warriors and long-distance runners you see on television.

The people in Nairobi were hospitable and quite social. As I walked the roads, rode the matatus, went to shops and ate at restaurants, I felt sincerely embraced. Matatus are crazy miniature-dancehall buses that take you from one place to the other faster than any compact car ever. In these matatus, many people are reading, talking politics, enjoying the scenery or dancing. Come evening, a lot of these matatus turn into rave-like buses ? flashing colorful lights and bumping to danceable music. It?s so much fun.

Everyone I met was well-educated, an avid reader or a diligent hustler. It was a slice of paradise.

As I made observations, I vowed to somehow implement the Kenyans? hard work ethic in my own life. The majority of Kenyans I met took civic engagement, education and politics very seriously. I?m not accustomed to seeing much of this type of overt intellectualism and interaction here in California, so imagine how elated I was to converse with, and gain knowledge from, new and creative perspectives.

People were easy to befriend. When I was stranded at Java House (a coffee shop) waiting on a ride, I met Patrick Bakira. He immediately struck up a conversation with me about politics and social issues. I knew I had to put aside my beliefs to truly be objective and open to learning and appreciating other ideas. What Americans consider to be social justice, feminism, or inequality, is not necessarily applicable in Kenya. Interpretations are dissimilar; also, we must keep in mind that their conflicts and experiences have been totally different than the West.?Although the approach, outlooks, and processes are unique, the objective is universal ? the betterment of society.

Bakira is an academic researcher, community leader and a commerce degree holder. Yes, I said ?academic researcher!? He passionately described his past efforts to bring social and economic mobility to the Kenyan youth, despite the disparities. I was able to relate since I, too, work closely with my community in elections, council meetings and other discussions to bring more resources to the underrepresented.

Bakira expressed that the main problems in the Kenyan government are the misuse of funds and ?lack of visionary leadership.? Corruption is rampant and, as Bakira said, ?anything goes when you have money. You can buy yourself into prestigious jobs and or out of almost any predicament.? Due to this, many Kenyan youth encounter joblessness and disproportionate destitution. According to Bakira, the No. 1 issue his country faces is a 40 percent unemployment rate. Were it not for corruption, some Kenyans argue that their country would be more prosperous, both within the continent and globally.

With all that said, the upcoming election and a new constitution are both very promising for the nation. The Kenyan election is set for March 4.

Establishing a new constitution in Kenya was far from easy. Kenyan people worked collectively for about two decades to achieve this massive change. The new constitution was promulgated in the summer of 2010 with a high approval rate among Kenyans. If the upcoming election is successful, it will strengthen Kenya?s lead position in the Horn of Africa. The new constitution promises equal opportunity, fair leadership and prosperity for all Kenyans. The promulgation of this constitution gives hope to all those living in Kenya because it will play a key role in eradicating issues of corruption, nepotism and tribalism. Patrick urges all Kenyans to unite and take advantage of their rights such as voting, speaking out against corruption, organizing protests, involving the media and so forth.

Education in Kenya
I cannot emphasize just how seriously education is taken in Kenya. It is a sight to see. Every resident I spoke with discussed the vitality a good education can lead to in a critical manner. This made me ponder about our drive for life-long learning in the United States. For instance, most of us living in America do not value the written word ? particularly the youth. I?m no statistician, but the number of Kenyans clutching something to read (or a resume to share) on a daily basis is incalculable.

Given my love for education, I decided that I couldn?t leave Kenya without visiting a few schools. I wanted to get a feel for what the educational institutions were like for the youngsters in Kenya. After my first week in Nairobi, I asked a university student to take me to the primary schools and ?slums? of the city. Vivianne Muthoni, a student at Nairobi University specializing in Space Law, took the time to show me around Kibera and Mathare slums.

Yes, I said ?Space Law!??Muthoni?spoke in detail about wanting to be the first to represent the Horn of Africa in the field of Space Law. Honestly, I didn?t know what Space Law was until I met Muthoni?and the more I looked into it, the more I admired this young, studious woman. Who would have thought there are rules regulating both national and international law that oversee whatever happens in outer space?

No matter where Muthoni?and I went, there was an abundance of astuteness and ingenuity. To put this simply, let me give you a comparison. The children here usually dread the end-of-recess bell, right? Well, Kenyan children welcome it ? partially because their parents are really involved with their education and if one were to gripe about school, they?d get in trouble.

I started by visiting a parish at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa located in Kibera. This church-school reaches out to families by assessing their needs through education and spirituality. I sat down with a former student, Naomi, who is now the administrative secretary and accounts assistant at the school. Naomi highlighted that ?in order to change a community for the better, you must offer skills, training and education rather than just food or clothes.?

Though I was carrying a digital camera to document as much of my trip as I could, I sensed much tension from the staff as well as from the students upon seeing the camera. Out of respect I turned it off. After meeting with the children of Presbyterian Church of East Africa, I realized why I should not have brought it in the first place. I overheard a kindergarten student speaking with his classmate. ?Look at her. She has a camera like the whites. She?s trying to exploit us.? I was surprised at what the child said but I understood the weight and reality behind his reference. It surprised me that a child could be so mindful of the widespread exploitation and misrepresentation of Africa (many American adults are not), sometimes for monetary gain.

Naomi later stressed that countless aid-hungry ?activists? come to Kibera with aimless promises and digital cameras, yet do nothing else but treat them like commodities. Self-righteous and aid-oriented ?activists? constantly bombard Kibera and eventually becoming a permanent fixture. Unfortunately many of these self-proclaimed activists merely photograph and document the plight of Africa, only capturing a miniscule representation of the social condition. Even though there are some well-meaning activists out there, we need to dispel and discuss the myth that all Africans are in need of saving. Slums exist everywhere, not just in non-Western countries.

Garissa County
Garissa was an overwhelming five- to six-hour drive from Nairobi. Garissa is located in the Northeastern region of Kenya and is approximately 370 km from Nairobi City. After our arrival in this small county on June 20, we checked into Nomad Palace Hotel and relaxed. Good thing because the following days were eventful and semi-terrifying.?The main purpose of our trip was to visit my father?s extended family. I also intended to take photos of Kenya?s lovely landscape. Things didn?t go as planned.

As we made our way through our relatives? neighborhood, blood-chilling screams filled the air as grenades and guns went off. Confused and dazed, I found my feet running alongside others who, too, were seeking safety. I would describe it as surreal.? I knew full well it was happening, but I couldn?t believe I was in the middle of it.

My father tried reassuring us by half-heartedly explaining how the ?nearby military base? was ?conducting routine exercises.? I thought to myself, ?Ha! I seriously doubt the Kenyan army practices on its people!? My younger brother and I knew something terrible happened.

The first thing that crossed my mind was, ?Oh shoot, I?m going to die!? Then I said to myself, ?We only die once so I might as well finish eating my pineapple and hide!?

Within minutes of hearing the loud blasts, we were notified that two churches were attacked in the area ? the same churches we passed a few minutes earlier! The word on the street was that the attackers took off in a vehicle.

After the attacks, I realized how my attire made me stick out like a sore thumb. Not a good look for the moment. The women in Garissa either dressed traditionally or Islamically. I didn?t quite fit either category. I was carrying a camera while wearing a small red scarf, ears poking out and everything. My clothing and the fact that I was carrying a camera advertised to everyone that I was not a resident.

The people in Garissa were resilient so I refused to be rigid. Thankfully, we were near the one uncle with a compound-like house. We hid and waited while the military and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) crackdown went on. While waiting at my uncle?s home, I changed into a bigger scarf and hid the camera. After a couple of hours,?we left for the hotel, which faced barricades and officers who were ready to shoot.

Seventeen innocent Kenyans lost their lives that day and over fifty people were injured. The fact that the killings took place less than 200 meters from where we stood was unsettling. Although I was well aware of the security alerts, I didn?t expect to face any ?terror.?

I managed to take some landscape pictures on my way to and from Garissa. When I speak to others about my trip, I try to leave the part about the attack out because I would hate for people to think of Kenya as some poverty-stricken warzone.

What I Brought Back
Just like any other traveler, I arrived with my own ideas and assumptions. I departed from a ?developing nation? with a deep void because I now yearn to see everyone around me engrossed in some type of reading material.?I also miss hearing the elders say that engaging with your community and being a role model to the youth are both very vital in generating a conscious society.

Nonetheless, I achieved my main goal of visiting family. Everything else was secondary.?I wouldn?t classify myself as a common sightseer as I didn?t engage in visiting typical tourist attractions. Rather, I had the opportunity to witness people in authentic real life situations.

If you were to ask me what resonated with me the most, I would have difficulty pinpointing one particular experience, because the accumulation of them have had a profound effect on me. Nonetheless, I have to mention one thing I found amazing: primary, secondary and vocational schools and institutions of higher education are constantly being built throughout Kenya. This made me think of California?s educational system and our current budget cuts; we face school closures, teacher layoffs, defunding of essential programs, etc. This trip transformed me into an even more educationally focused individual and I am grateful for that.

Overall my journey was memorable, gratifying and, most of all, didactic. I recommend everyone visit Kenya and take note. We should try to be innovative and determined in fostering societal changes that will lead to equal opportunities for all, not only the underprivileged.

Besides the best fruits on earth, I think I would sneak back some Kenyan endurance and educational values ? if customs would let me, that is. All in all, I can?t wait to go on holiday?back to Kenya!

?

HBT: Rays set AL record for strikeouts

Rays right-hander James Shields reached 200 strikeouts for the second straight season Friday in a 12-1 win over the Blue Jays. Along the way, he recorded the team?s 1,267 strikeout, breaking the American League record set by the 2001 Yankees.

J.P. Arencibia was the victim. It was Shields? third strikeout of the night on his way to finishing the game with nine.

The Rays ended the game with 1,275 strikeouts, leaving them 129 shy of the major league record of 1,404 strikeouts set by the 2003 Cubs. That?s out of reach with just 11 games to go. Still, 1,350 or strikeouts for an AL team could well be considered more impressive that 1,404 from an NL team that got to face pitchers most of the year.

Shields in the Rays? leader at 202 strikeouts for the season, with David Price not too far behind at 188. Rookie Matt Moore has 169 strikeouts in 169 1/3 innings. The bullpen also deserves plenty of credit. Wade Davis has 80 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings, Joel Peralta has 77 in 61 1/3 innings and Jake McGee has 66 in 50 1/3 innings. Fernando Rodney?s 68 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings seem almost modest in comparison.

First lawsuits filed against theater in Colorado shooting

DENVER (Reuters) - Three Colorado moviegoers who were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a July screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" on Friday sued the owner of the theater, Cinemark USA, accusing it of failing to provide adequate security, their lawyers said.

The action marks the first known civil lawsuits filed over the July 20 shootings at a suburban Denver screening of the Batman movie that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others.

James Holmes, a 24-year-old former neuroscience graduate student at the University of Colorado, has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the case.

"Readily available security procedures, security equipment and security personnel would likely have prevented or deterred the gunman from accomplishing his planned assault on the theater's patrons," the law firm of Keating, Wagner, Polidori and Free said in a written statement.

Representatives of Cinemark could not immediately be reached for comment.

On the day of the shooting, prosecutors allege Holmes bought a ticket to the movie, left the theater through an exit door, propping it open on his way out. He then returned to the theater clad in ballistic protective gear and armed with multiple weapons, opening fire on the crowd, prosecutors say.

Public defender Daniel King has said his client suffers from mental illness and sought help before the shootings.

In the lawsuit filed in Denver federal court, victims Joshua Nowlan, Denise Traynom and Brandon Axelrod claim the theater chain was aware of previous criminal activity at or near the cinema including "assaults and robberies" and at least one other shooting involving gang members.

"Although the theater was showing a midnight premiere of the movie and was expecting large crowds of people to attend the midnight showing, no security personnel were present for that showing," the lawsuit said.

Nowlan suffered disabling injuries to his left leg and his right arm, which was nearly severed from the gunshots, the lawsuit said. Traynom was shot in the buttocks and Axelrod was shot in the right knee and ankle.

The lawsuit also states "there was no action taken by theater employees to safely evacuate the many people" in the theater once the shooting spree got underway.

The judge presiding over the criminal case ruled on Friday that some documents in the court file can be publicly released, but arrest and search warrants that detail the specifics of the crime will remain sealed because of the ongoing investigation.

Also on Friday, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said that Cinemark sometime next year will reopen the theater, which has been closed since the shooting.

"The theater has been a valued part of our community for many years," Hogan said in a statement. "I am confident Cinemark will continue to remain sensitive to victims, their families, their employees and our community throughout their process of remodeling and reopening."

Final testing under way for Wyoming supercomputer

21 hrs.

Final testing is being done on a National Center for Atmospheric Research supercomputer on the outskirts of Cheyenne that will be used for climate modeling and other Earth sciences.

Research is expected to begin this fall on the new computer, called Yellowstone, which has enough power to rank among the top dozen or so fastest supercomputers in the world.

So how fast is it, exactly?

The computer will run at a speed of up to 1.5 petaflops, or 1.5 quadrillion operations per second. Put another way: If you counted one number per second, it would take a lot longer than your entire lifetime or anybody else's to get all the way up to 1.5 quadrillion. Try more than 47 million years.

The roughly $30 million IBM machine fills much of a 153,000-square-foot, custom-built facility.

The Boulder, Colo.-based National Center for Atmospheric Research already has lined up 11 initial research projects that will get time on its machine starting this fall, center spokesman David Hosansky said.

One of the upcoming projects will model air movement inside hurricanes and tornadoes. Another will examine how weather and air quality could change in North America in the years ahead.

First, the machine needs to pass its final tests. The process is more complicated than trying out a new laptop.

"These complex systems need extensive testing and analysis before we could formally accept it," Hosansky said Wednesday.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research hopes to wrap up testing and accept the supercomputer in October. A ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Gov. Matt Mead and National Science Foundation Director Subra Suresh is scheduled for Oct. 15.

The supercomputer is 30 times more powerful than the machine currently in use at the center's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research has a long history of using supercomputers. One of the world's first, the Cray 1-A, crunched numbers at the center from 1977 to 1989. The Yellowstone supercomputer will be 9.7 million times faster with 3.4 million times the disk capacity and 19 million times the central memory size of the Cray 1-A, according to NCAR.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The Wyoming Legislature committed $21 million for the supercomputer project in 2007.
