Maine's Same-Sex Marriage Law Goes Into Effect

PORTLAND, Maine -- Arriving in a limo, Donna Galluzzo and Lisa Gorney had all the trappings of a traditional wedding: Rings, flowers, wedding vows, an entourage and a friend to officiate.

With tears in their eyes, they were among the first gay couples to exchange wedding vows early Saturday morning after Maine's same-sex marriage law went into effect at midnight.

"We're paving the way for people to go after us. I think it's just amazing. It's freeing. It's what's right," an emotionally drained Gorney said after their ceremony in front of City Hall.

After waiting years and seeing marriage rights nearly awarded and then retracted, gay couples in Maine's largest city didn't have to wait a moment longer than necessary to wed, with licenses issued at the stroke of midnight as the law went into effect.

Steven Bridges and Michael Snell were the first in line, and they received cheers from more than 200 people waiting outside after they wed in the clerk's office.

"It's historic. We've waited our entire lives for this," said Bridges, a retail manager, who's been in a relationship with the Snell, a massage therapist, for nine years. Bridges, 42, and Snell, 53, wore lavender and purple carnations on black T-shirts with the words "Love is love."

Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state approved gay marriage in November, making them the first states to do so by popular vote. Gay marriage already was legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia, but those laws were either enacted by lawmakers or through court rulings.

In Maine, Gov. Paul LePage signed off on the certified election results on Nov. 29, so the new law was to go into effect 30 days from that date. The law already is in effect in Washington state; Maryland's takes effect on Tuesday, the first day of 2013.

Nobody knew exactly how many couples would be rushing to get their marriage licenses early Saturday in Maine. Falmouth joined Portland in opening at midnight. Other communities including Bangor, Brunswick and Augusta planned to hold special Saturday hours.

In Portland, the mood was festive with the crowd cheering and horns sounding at midnight as Bridges and Snell began filling out paperwork in the clerk's office in Portland City Hall. There were free carnation boutonnieres and cupcakes, and a jazz trio played.

Outside, the raucous group that gathered in front of the building cheered Bridges and Snell as if they were rock stars and broke into the Beatles' "All You Need is Love."

Fourteen couples received marriage licenses, and five of them married on the spot, a city spokeswoman said. Many of those who received their marriage license were middle-aged, and some said they never envisioned a day when gay couples could wed just like straight couples.

"I came out years ago and the only thing we wanted was to not get beaten up," said Steven Jones, 50, who married his partner, Jamous Lizotte, on his 35th birthday.

Not everyone was getting married right away.

Suzanne Blackburn and Joanie Kunian, of Portland, were among those in line to get their license at midnight, but they planned to have their marriage ceremony later. One of their grandchildren wanted them to get married on Valentine's Day.

"I don't think that we dared to dream too big until we had the governor's signature," Blackburn said. "That's why it's so important, because it feels real."

Bridges and Snell already considered themselves married because they'd held a commitment ceremony attended by friends and family six years ago. Nonetheless, they thought it was important to make it official under state law, as Snell's two daughters watched.

Katie and Carolyn Snell, the daughters, said the ceremony made formal what they knew all along to be true about the couple.

"It's just a piece of paper," said Katie Snell. "Their love has been there, their commitment has been there, all along. It's the last step to make it a true official marriage because everything else has been there from the start."

AP sources: Saints, Payton, agree to terms on deal

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton will indeed be together again next season as the bounty scandal fades into history and the bid to win a second Super Bowl resumes.

Payton has agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, according to two people familiar with the deal.

The people told The Associated Press about the deal Friday night on condition of anonymity because it hasn't been signed and final details regarding the length of the contract and financial compensation are still being worked out.

"Very happy it is official," Brees said in an email to the AP. "Never had any doubts."

Payton was due to begin his seventh season as the Saints' head coach in 2012 before being suspended for the whole season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in connection with the NFL's bounty investigation.

Payton signed an extension in 2011 that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015, but Goodell objected to certain language in that deal, leaving Payton's future uncertain until the deal was reached Friday. The language in question in the previous extension gave Payton the right to opt out early if general manager Mickey Loomis left the club for any reason.

The new agreement, which was first reported by Fox Sports, also must be approved by the NFL.

Payton is the only coach in Saints history to win a Super Bowl, a title earned at the end of the 2009 season. But his legacy was tarnished by the NFL's bounty probe, as Goodell ruled that Payton failed to exert proper institutional control over a cash-for-hits bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from 2009-2011.

Although the Saints objected to the characterization of what coaches and players have said was nothing more than a performance pool for big plays, Goodell suspended Payton for the entire season. The commissioner also suspended Loomis for half of the season and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games.

Payton is 62-34 as in regular-season games as Saints head coach and 5-3 in the postseason. During the three seasons before his suspension, the Saints won 41 regular-season and playoff games combined, more than any other team in the NFL.

Payton has primarily handled the offense in New Orleans, teaming up with Brees to break numerous NFL and club records. The single-season NFL records set by the Saints in 2011 included yards passing by a team (5,505) and a quarterback (5,476). The Saints also set a record for total offensive yards with 7,474.

Although speculation ran rampant that Payton could essentially become a free agent after this season and end up elsewhere, Brees repeatedly said he would be "shocked" if Payton ended up anywhere but New Orleans next season. Brees is under contract with the Saints through the 2016 season, and Payton was the driving force in the Saints' effort to acquire Brees as a free agent in 2006.

Without Payton on the sideline this season, the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Brees remained prolific, but his 18 interceptions also tied for a league high heading into the final weekend of the season.

The Saints headed into Sunday's season finale against Carolina at 7-8, hoping to avoid their first losing season since they went 7-9 in 2007.

Payton is expected to return to the Saints immediately after the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, unless Goodell allows him to return earlier.

When Payton reports back to work, it will offically close the book on the bounty saga that has overshadowed the Saints' organization since the NFL first announced on March 2 that it found the Saints ran a program that paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured opponents.

In addition to the suspensions of Payton, Loomis and Vitt, the Saints also were docked second-round draft choices in 2012 and 2013, though Goodell has said he could potentially restores the Saints' 2013 second-round choice and dock the team a later-round pick.

Meanwhile, four current or former Saints were initially given suspensions of varying lengths. Two current Saints defensive captains, linebacker Jon Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, were among those suspended. Vilma was banned for the whole season and Smith for four games, but the players successfully challenged their punishment with the help of the NFL Players Association and never served a game.

Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed by Goodell to oversee the players' appeals, ruled that the NFL probe was accurate in its findings that the Saints ran and improper program and attempted to cover it up, but that the evidence was not strong enough to warrant unprecedented suspensions for players who had been only fined for similar behavior in the past.

Winter storm whips into Northeast

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the nation's midsection into the Northeast has risen to 7.

Officials in Ohio are blaming the bad weather for a crash that killed an 18-year-old girl, who lost control of her car Wednesday afternoon and smashed into an oncoming snow plow on a highway northeast of Cincinnati.

The storm is expected to drop one to two feet of snow on parts of the Northeast just a day after it swept through the nation's middle, dumping a record snowfall in Arkansas and ruining holiday travel plans.

The National Weather Service says the Northeast's heaviest accumulations will be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm heads to Canada on Friday.

Despite the wet weather, no flights are delayed Thursday morning cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Heavy Snow Blankets Southern Illinois

FIRST PERSON | WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- In a year of severe weather, including a drought that left the local area devastated, a winter storm has so far dumped six inches of snow with more still falling here in southern Illinois.

As of 8 a.m. local time, there was still a blizzard watch for the area until noon with snow in the forecast until at least 4 p.m. Authorities are advising everyone except for emergency workers to stay off of the roads until the storm passes.

The snow began falling locally a little after 10 p.m., though the winds, gusting up to 35mph, had begun in the early evening. The heaviest snow began to fall at 2 a.m. Visibility was so poor that venturing away from the house would leave you in a swirling haze of snow with winds inhibiting your ability to find your way back.

While visibility has improved considerably, the blowing snow alone makes for hazardous driving conditions. I live on a normally busy street and there are no signs anyone has attempted to venture out thus far.

There are currently no reports of power outages or downed limbs. The best course of action at this point is to stay inside and allow nature to take its course and then allow clean-up workers to do their jobs.

Local message boards have been speculating that the local area is in for a winter with far more snow than usual. The National Weather Service has projected that the winter will be colder than normal and that the area should be out of the drought before the farmers start spring planting. This doesn't bode well in an area that is 29 inches low on precipitation due to the drought but only averages eight inches of snow each winter!

Teacher Brings Loaded Gun To Minnesota School For Fear Of Newtown Shooting

Fear over the Newtown school shooting prompted a Minnesota teacher to bring a loaded gun to school last week, forcing a school lockdown. The unnamed teacher, a female in her 50s, has been placed on administrative leave from Seward Montessori School in Minneapolis.

"This is the first case like this I've ever heard of," Minneapolis police Sgt. Bill Palmer told KMSP. "In this day in age in this week, handguns in schools are of great concern to everyone."

Acting on a tip from a staff member, the school principal alerted the school resource officer, who confiscated the gun from the teacher, in her 21st year of employment at the school. The loaded .357 Magnum handgun was in the educator's locker in the teacher's lounge, according to the Star Tribune. School officials confirm that no students or staff were harmed or injured.

While the teacher was not arrested, she could face misdemeanor charges for violating conditions of her Minnesota conceal carry permit, which prohibits firearms in schools without written permission from a principal or school official.

Parents were notified of the incident by phone.

"I had a little meltdown, I was in shock," Jeanette Wiedemeier Bower, the parent of a 10-year-old at Seward Montessori told KMSP. "You trust that the people who take care of your kids have everything under control."

In a statement to KARE, Minneapolis Schools officials said the district followed safety procedures in dealing with the incident, and school leaders "have been vigilant in preparing for emergency situations by reviewing safety plans."

The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting that killed 26, including 20 children, has spurred renewed national interest in gun control. As lawmakers on the left express staunch support for stricter gun laws, those on the right are starting to show willingness for change.

Still, Republicans in a number of states have announced plans to introduce legislation that would allow or even require school staff to carry guns. Republican state Rep. Tony Cornish, for one, plans to sponsor a bill that allows teachers to carry loaded weapons in classrooms.

One school in Texas does permit concealed carry by teachers, and former Education Secretary Bill Bennett took to "Meet the Press" earlier this month to express his support for arming school staff.?

Still, experts say that bringing weapons onto school grounds would do more harm than good, and teachers have called the proposal "absurd."

"Singular horrible events like this past week make us all upset, but if we look at the data, it doesn't make sense that that's where we need to beef up security in a very expensive way -- not only financially but also at the cost of our children's feeling of security," Kenneth Dodge, director of the Center for Child and Family Policy at Duke University told The Huffington Post last week. "Isn't it morestraightforward to just get rid of the guns?"

Russian parliament approves ban on American adoptions

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children went to President Vladimir Putin for his signature on Wednesday after winning final approval from parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law meant to punish Russian human rights abusers.

Putin has strongly hinted he will sign the bill, which also outlaws some U.S.-funded non-governmental groups and hits back at U.S. sanctions by imposing visa bans and asset freezes on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians.

The Federation Council, Russia's upper parliament house, voted unanimously to approve the bill, which has clouded U.S.-Russian relations and outraged liberals who say lawmakers are playing a political game with the lives of children.

The bill has drawn unusual criticism from some government officials including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Olga Golodets, a deputy prime minister who said it may violate an international convention on children's rights.

Putin has described it as an emotional but appropriate response to U.S. legislation he said was poisoning relations.

U.S. President Barack Obama this month signed off on the Magnitsky Act, which imposes visa bans and asset freezes on Russians accused of human rights violations, including those linked to the death in custody of an anti-graft lawyer in 2009.

The ban on American adoptions takes Russia's response a step further, playing into deep sensitivity among Russians - and the government in particular - over adoptions by foreigners, which skyrocketed after the 1991 Soviet collapse.

The bill is named for Dima Yakovlev - a Russian-born toddler who died of heat stroke when his adoptive American father forgot him in a car.

MORAL GROUNDS

"It is immoral to send our children abroad to any country," Federation Council deputy Valery Shtyrov said in a one-sided debate peppered with hawkish rhetoric before the 143-0 vote.

Child rights advocates say the law, due to take effect on January 1 if signed by Putin, will deprive children of a way out of Russia's overcrowded orphanage system.

"This is the most vile law passed since Putin came to power," opposition activist Boris Nemtsov said, adding that he was certain the president would sign it. "Putin is taking children hostage, like a terrorist".

Police said they had arrested seven people protesting against the law on Wednesday outside the Federation Council.

Nevertheless, lawmaker Gennady Makin said the Magnitsky Act demanded a tough response.

"He who comes to Russia with a sword dies by that sword," he said.

The dispute adds to tension in U.S.-Russia ties already strained over issues ranging from Syria to the Kremlin's treatment of opponents and restrictions imposed on civil society groups since Putin, in power since 2000, began a new six-year term in May.

The Russian bill would outlaw U.S.-funded "non-profit organizations that engage in political activity", which Putin accuses of trying to influence Russian politics.

Russia ejected the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which funds Russian non-governmental groups, in October, and Putin has signed a law forcing many foreign-funded organizations to register as "foreign agents" - a term that evokes the Cold War.

Americans affected by the visa ban could include those involved in the prosecution of Viktor Bout, a Russian arms trader serving a 25-year prison term in the United States after an arrest and trial condemned as unfair by Moscow.

Novel legalistic ? education: Right to Culture ? Mike Linksvayer

What passes for copyright education aimed at the general public (caveat: aiming to educate about copyright out of context of broader info- and social-policy is misguided, but I?ll leave that be for now, and the campaign described fortunately doesn?t mention copyright) might be categorized along the following:

  • Legalistic (explaining what can or can?t be done within current law) and/or normative
  • Blunt (e.g., downloading is a crime, copying isn?t theft) and/or turgid (e.g., how to comply with the DMCA, what maybe fair use, how public copyright licenses work)
  • Tilted in favor of more or less restriction

It?s easy to think of examples of examples of all of the resulting combinations, except for one: legalistic, blunt, and favoring less restriction. The nearest I can recall were the EFF ?MP3 is not a crime? and ?coding is not a crime? stickers, but it is hard to know what to take from those without knowing background stories (and I can?t recall what the MP3 one referred to), and ?not a crime? is not very positive. Thus I find the Modern Poland Foundation?s Right to Culture campaign interesting (emphasis added):

The Modern Poland Foundation has launched a social campaign ?The Right to Culture?. Its main goal is to enhance public awareness of freedoms under the copyright law.

The message is carried by three simple statements which are consistent with the copyright law, but often wrongly seen as a violation:

I have the right to copy books.
I have the right to download films.
I have the right to share music.

The three sentences ? in speech bubbles ? have been placed on the Warsaw subway cars? windows. They also point to the project website prawokultury.pl, where one can find detailed information explaining legal provisions of the Copyright Law in Poland.

Art. 23 of the Copyright Law states that one is ?permitted to use free of charge the work, which has been already disseminated for purposes of private use without the permission of the author.? This includes ?the use of single copies of the work by a group of persons staying in a personal interrelation with each other, including in particular blood relation, kinship or a social relationship.? This means that restrictions concerning everyday activities such as copying books or e-books, downloading films or sharing music or files are not unconditional. Therefore, it is legal to make a copy of a book, download a film from the Internet or send a music album to a friend.

Go to the announcement for links and more.

Perhaps similarly legalistic, blunt, and favoring less restriction campaigns should be considered for your jurisdiction.

S&P cuts Egypt rating on political strife

DEAR ABBY: While searching for two of my husband's childhood friends, with his knowledge, I believe I may have found a child he doesn't know is his. I'm not positive that the child is his, but the time frame and location indicate that he could be, and there's a strong resemblance to my husband's brother. (I have seen photos on the Internet.) I am curious whether my hunch is correct, but I'm afraid of asking the questions, not knowing how they would be received. My husband is a kind and caring person, a great husband and father. ...

Church-State Separation Group Seeks to End Prayers at West Point ...

Cadet_Chapel_USMAWest Point, New York ? A Washington-based group that works to separate God from government is demanding that a prominent military academy end all prayers that are traditionally held during official school events.

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, led by Barry Lynn, an attorney and licensed ?minister? in the United Church of Christ, says that the prayers being facilitated at West Point Military Academy in New York are unconstitutional. The organization send a letter to the institution last week asking that commanders cease and desist the practice.

?We have received several complaints about the United States Military Academy at West Point?s pattern of presenting prayers held throughout the four-year program of instruction,? the letter states, listing a number of events, including Thanksgiving dinners and graduations. ?West Point?s inclusion of government-sponsored prayers at these events creates a pervasive atmosphere of religiosity and cannot be reconciled with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.?

?Cadets are uniformly told that attendance at these events are required,? the correspondence continues. ?Being forced to attend an event that includes a prayer is at the heart of the kind of religious coercion that the Constitution prohibits. ? The government does not have to physically force someone to utter a prayer or to genuflect before God in order to run afoul of that prohibition.?

It then asked that the academy respond within 30 days.

?West Point cadets should be able to train for service in our nation?s military without having religion forced upon them,? director Barry Lynn commented further. ?Academy officials must respect the religious liberty rights of all cadets, who should be free to make their own decisions about prayer without government coercion.?

The organization also pointed to an atheist named Blake Page who recently dropped out of West Point just months before graduation, ?charging that the institution is rife with fundamentalist Christian proselytizing.?

However, others support the prayers at the academy and state that Lynn?s organization is wrong in attempting to remove God from West Point.

?George Washington was famous for his prayers for his soldiers,? Ron Crews of Chaplain Alliance told reporters. ?He was the one who asked Congress to authorize chaplains to be in every brigade.?

Former Navy chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt agreed.

?[The 'separation of church and state' is]?not in the Constitution, and it doesn?t mean to limit military prayers,? he told OneNewsNow. ?The easiest way to prove that is that in 1802, Thomas Jefferson himself personally signed the Navy regulations, ordering chaplains to lead prayers on Navy ships.?

?Barry Lynn?s objective is to destroy Christianity in America. It has nothing to do with wanting to support the First Amendment under his understanding of it,? added retired Lieutenant General William ?Jerry? Boykin, who now serves as vice-president of Family Research Council. ?Prayer at West Point is a tradition. Because it is a tradition that derives from Christianity, Barry and others want to destroy that tradition because they are anti-Christian and want to erase any remnant of the influence of Christianity on our society.?

Until approximately 40 years ago, West Point required all cadets to faithfully attend church services out of its devotion to God and His word.

?Occasionally some friend, parent or new cadet will question the wisdom of obligatory chapel attendance. A former Commandant of Cadets answered this statement by saying that, should such emphasis on religion be neglected, West Point would fail in its mission,? an online 1958 publication about the history and beliefs of the academy outlines. ?It is the Academy?s task to prepare as officers men who hold ?duty? as a sacred trust; ?honor,? a hallowed possession; ?country,? a treasured heritage. This type of man, the Commandant believed, can never be developed if God and His worship are left out of a man?s normal life.?

As previously reported, on December 1st, West Point hosted its first-ever homosexual ?wedding? at its historic Cadet Chapel.

West Point has confirmed that it has received Lynn?s letter, and states that prayers during academy events are completely voluntary.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State has been challenging public displays of Christian and religious symbols across the nation since 1992.

Egypt's draft charter gets 'yes' majority in vote

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist-backed constitution received a "yes" majority in a final round of voting on a referendum that saw a low voter turnout, but the deep divisions it has opened up threaten to fuel continued turmoil.

Passage is a victory for Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, but a costly one. The bruising battle over the past month stripped away hope that the long-awaited constitution would bring a national consensus on the path Egypt will take after shedding its autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

Instead, Morsi disillusioned many non-Islamists who had once backed him and has become more reliant on his core support in the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. Hard-liners in his camp are determined to implement provisions for stricter rule by Islamic law in the charter, which is likely to further fuel divisions.

Saturday's voting in 17 of Egypt's 27 provinces was the second and final round of the referendum. Preliminary results released early Sunday by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood showed that 71.4 percent of those who voted Saturday said "yes" after 95.5 percent of the ballots were counted. Only about eight million of the 25 million Egyptians eligible to vote ? a turnout of about 30 percent ? cast their ballots. The Brotherhood has accurately predicted election results in the past by tallying results provided by its representatives at polling centers.

In the first round of voting, about 56 percent said "yes" to the charter. The turnout then was about 32 percent.

The results of the two rounds mean the referendum was approved by about 63 percent.

Morsi's liberal and secular opposition now faces the task of trying to organize the significant portion of the population angered by what it sees as attempts by Morsi and the Brotherhood to gain a lock on political power. The main opposition group, the National Salvation Front, said it would now start rallying for elections for the lawmaking, lower house of parliament, expected early next year.

"We feel more empowered because of the referendum. We proved that at least we are half of society (that) doesn't approve of all this. We will build on it," the Front's spokesman, Khaled Daoud, said. Still, he said, there was "no appetite" at the moment for further street protests.

The new constitution would come into effect once official results are announced, expected in several days. When they are, Morsi is expected to call for the election of parliament's lawmaking, lower chamber no more than two months later.

In a sign of disarray in Morsi's administration, his vice president and ? possibly ? the central bank governor resigned during Saturday's voting. Vice President Mahmoud Mekki's resignation had been expected since his post is eliminated under the new constitution. But its hasty submission even before the charter has been sealed and his own resignation statement suggested it was linked to Morsi's policies.

"I have realized a while ago that the nature of politics don't suit my professional background as a judge," his resignation letter, read on state TV, said. Mekki said he had first submitted his resignation last month but events forced him to stay on.

The status of Central Bank Governor Farouq el-Oqdah was murkier. State TV first reported his resignation, then soon after reported the Cabinet denied he has stepped down in a possible sign of confusion. El-Oqdah, in his post since 2003, has reportedly been seeking to step down but the administration was trying to convince him to stay on.

The confusion over el-Oqdah's status comes at a time when the government is eager to show some stability in the economy as the Egyptian pound has been sliding and a much-needed $4.8 billion loan from the IMF has been postponed.

Over the past month, seven of Morsi's 17 top advisers and the one Christian among his top four aides resigned. Like Mekki, they said they had never been consulted in advance on any of the president's moves, including his Nov. 22 decrees, since rescinded, that granted himself near absolute powers.

Those decrees sparked large street protests by hundreds of thousands around the country, bringing counter-rallies by Islamists. The turmoil was further fueled with a Constituent Assembly almost entirely made up of Islamists finalized the constitution draft in the dead of night amid a boycott by liberals and Christians. Rallies turned violent. Brotherhood offices were attacked, and Islamists attacked an opposition sit-in outside the presidential palace in Cairo leading to clashes that left 10 dead.

The turmoil opened up a vein of bitterness that the polarizing constitution will do little to close. Morsi opponents accused him of seeking to create a new Mubarak-style autocracy. The Brotherhood accused his rivals of being former Mubarak officials trying to topple an elected president and return to power. Islamists branded opponents "infidels" and vowed they will never accept anything but "God's law" in Egypt.

Both rounds of voting saw claims by the opposition and rights groups of voting violations. On Saturday, they said violations ranged from polling stations opening late to Islamists seeking to influence voters to say "yes." The official MENA news agency said at least two judges have been removed for coercing voters to cast "yes" ballots.

The opposition's talk of now taking the contest to the parliamentary elections represented a shift in the conflict ? an implicit gamble that the opposition can try to compete under rules that the Islamists have set. The Brotherhood's electoral machine has been one of its strongest tools since Mubarak's fall, while liberal and secular parties have been divided and failed to create a grassroots network.

In the first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections last winter, the Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis won more than 70 percent of seats in the lower chamber, which was later dissolved by a court order. The opposition is now betting it can do better with the anger over Morsi's performance so far.

The schism in a country that has for decades seen its institutions function behind a facade of stability was on display in Saturday's lines of voters.

In the village of Ikhsas in the Giza countryside south of Cairo, an elderly man who voted "no" screamed in the polling station that the charter is "a Brotherhood constitution."

"We want a constitution in the interest of Egypt. We want a constitution that serves everyone, not just the Brotherhood. They can't keep fooling the people," Ali Hassan, a 68-year-old wearing traditional robes, said.

But others were drawn by the hope that a constitution would finally bring some stability after nearly two years of tumultuous transitional politics. There appeared to be a broad economic split, with many of the middle and upper classes rejecting the charter and the poor voting "yes" ? though the division was not always clear-cut.

In Ikhsas, Hassan Kamel, a 49-year-old day worker, said "We the poor will pay the price" of a no vote.

He dismissed the opposition leadership as elite and out of touch. "Show me an office for any of those parties that say no here in Ikhsas or south of Cairo. They are not connecting with people."

In the industrial working class district of Shubra El-Kheima just north of Cairo, women argued while waiting in line over the draft charter.

Samira Saad, a 55 year old housewife, said she wanted her five boys to find jobs.

"We want to get on with things and we want things to be better," she said.

Nahed Nessim, a Christian, questioned the integrity of the process. "There is a lot of corruption. My vote won't count." She was taken to task by Muslim women wearing the niqab, which blankets the entire body and leaves only the eyes visible and is worn by ultraconservative women.

"We have a president who fears God and memorizes His words. Why are we not giving him a chance until he stands on his feet?" said one of the women, Faiza Mehana, 48.

The promise of stability even drew one Christian woman in Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, to vote "yes" ? a break with most Christians nationwide who oppose the draft. Hanaa Zaki said she wanted an end to Egypt's deepening economic woes.

"I have a son who didn't get paid for the past six months. We have been in this crisis for so long and we are fed up," said Zaki, waiting in line along with bearded Muslim men and Muslim women wearing headscarves in Fayoum, a province that is home to both a large Christian community and a strong Islamist movement.

The scene In Giza's upscale Mohandiseen neighborhood was starkly different.

A group of 12 women speaking to each other in a mix of French, Arabic and English said they were all voting "no."

"It's not about Christian versus Muslim, it is Muslim Brotherhood versus everyone else," said one of them, Shahira Sadeq, a Christian physician.

Kamla el-Tantawi, 65, said she was voting "against what I'm seeing" ? and she gestured at a woman nearby wearing the niqab.

"I lose sleep thinking about my grandchildren and their future. They never saw the beautiful Egypt we did," she said, harkening back to a time decades ago when few women even wore headscarves covering their hair, much less the black niqab.

Many voters were under no illusions the turmoil would end.

"I don't trust the Brotherhood anymore and I don't trust the opposition either. We are forgotten, the most miserable and the first to suffer," said Azouz Ayesh, sitting with his neighbors as their cattle grazed in a nearby field in the Fayoum countryside.

He said a "yes" would bring stability and a "no" would mean no stability. But, he added, "I will vote against this constitution."

1 killed, 1 wounded in bar shooting near Seattle

(AP) ? A 30-year-old Seattle man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at a crowded bar in Bellevue, Wash., early Monday, police said.

The shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. at Munchbar at Bellevue Square, an upscale shopping center about 10 miles east of Seattle, said Carla Iafrate, a spokeswoman for the Bellevue Police Department.

Police officers were outside the bar when gunfire erupted because a large crowd had gathered there, she said.

More than 600 people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting. "It was a very complicated scene," Iafrate said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital. Iafrate did not immediately know his age or hometown.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. No one has been arrested, and investigators were trying to put together a description of the shooter, she said.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, telling local media they dove for cover or hit the floor when they heard gunshots.

David Wygant: This Holiday Season, Love Thy Ex

A word of advice: 'tis the season to love your ex.

How did that make you feel when I said that? Let's explain things in a better way.

All of us are divorced. Most of us have children. And who are holidays about, anyway? It's about the kids.

Whether your child still believes in Santa Claus or your child just really enjoys having the family together because they are coming home from college -- whatever age your kid is -- Christmas is still magical.

The other day I was on Netflix and I realized they don't have "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Netflix on Demand is kind of a waste of money and a waste of time. So I went over to Amazon and ordered Santa Claus is Coming to Town. And I played it for my two-year-old daughter for the very, very first time.

She was so happy. And after she saw Santa, she looked at me and said, "Daddy, I want a dollhouse for Christmas."

"What else do you want Santa to bring you?"

"I want Santa to bring me lots of things. I can't wait to go see Santa Claus."

It reminded me how beautiful Christmas really is. The magic of Christmas is the belief in the season.

Now, I know that a lot of you celebrate Christmas for the religious aspects, but a lot of us don't. For a lot of us, Christmas is just magic. It's going back to childhood and remembering what it's like to feel Santa for the very, very first time, and to realize that Santa is going to buy you all of these great things.

It's the anticipation. It's the build up. And feuding exes shouldn't ruin it.

This Christmas, make it about the kids. Whatever bone you have to pick with your ex, whether your divorce is final, whether your divorce is still in process, whether you're still battling over money or whatever it might be, put it aside for now and make Christmas about your children.

Kids anticipate this time of year, especially the little ones who still believe in Santa. The older ones are looking forward to Christmas holiday, seeing their aunts, their uncles, and grandparents.

They don't want to hear mom and dad fighting over the Christmas ham again. They don't want to see you miserable and unhappy. It's time to put your children first.

Forgive your ex. The best thing to do this holiday is to put the divorce away for a bit. Put it aside and just co-parent together during this holiday time. It's going to make the kids happy.

I was a child of divorce and I remember my first Christmas without my parents together. I remember the whole "which parent can buy the better present and win you over" game they played. It didn't make me feel good, and I was 19.

So get on the same page with your ex and figure out how you can still keep Christmas magical for your kids, regardless of whether the magic is gone between the two of you.

Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man 3 Interview

Iron Man 3 Shane Black Favreau Story Details

The genre of superhero movies is about to get a lot more interesting, with Iron Man 3?leading the charge. After Marvel set a high watermark with this past summer?s The Avengers, the stakes have never been higher. How fitting, then, that the franchise that got the studio?s movie universe started should be trusted to keep the momentum rolling.

It may be an odd time to change directors, but Jon Favreau has made way for writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), and the first full Iron Man 3 trailer proved the decision might very well have been a good one. Leading man Robert Downey Jr. recently opened up on just how impressed he already is with Black?s direction, along with the performances being turned in by his fellow cast members.

Speaking during the The?Cinefamily?telethon (via?CBM), Downey Jr. spoke to Black?s screenwriting history as paving the way for buddy cop/action films to be taken seriously, but he?s no stranger to the Iron Man series either. Apparently. it was Black who Favreau and Downey Jr. went to when problems arose on the set of the first film:

?I adore him. I?ve been a fan of Shane Black since I saw ?Lethal Weapon.? When we were doing the first Iron Man, Jon Favreau and I used to call up Shane Black. We had two lifeline calls; one was to J.J. Abrams, which was about the third act. And for the other call, we went to Shane?s house.

?For instance, in the ?Iron Man? scene where Tony Stark comes back from captivity and calls a press conference, and then asked everybody to sit down, the speech Stark gives all came from Shane Black. So to get him to do ?Iron Man 3,? it has just been this awesome experience and one of my favorite working experiences. ?Iron Man 3? is going to be a very, very bold genre film, from the storytelling.?

The extended footage in the Japanese version of the IM3 trailer led us to draw a few new conclusions, particularly about Pepper being kidnapped, and the staggering destruction of Stark?s coastal mansion taking place in the first act of the film, not at its climax. Those assumptions are clearly reinforced by Downey Jr.?s description of a shocking plot and missing missus.

Shane Black Robert Downey Jr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

When people think of Downey Jr. and Black, their past collaboration on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?must be brought up. One of the actor?s most underrated performances and Black?s directorial debut, the unconventional detective story was overflowing with quirk. That same unique approach applied to the superhero formula won?t just offer something new, but for the man sporting the armor, promises big things for Stark?s saga going forward:

?Shane Black really knows the superhero genre, but I think the main thing is that he?s always looking at complexities within complexities [and so on]. And he always likes it when a film kind of stops for a reason you can?t understand, and then picks up and goes in a direction you?ve never imagined. Usually when you have a straight-forward narrative, if at act 1, 2 or 3, ?There?s Tony, Tony?s in trouble, where?s Pepper, Tony wins.? By the time we were doing the 2nd one, I was like ?where?s Pepper.? Shane is just a genius!?

Aside from the individual plot details and story beats, it seems Black?s previous claims that he wasn?t necessarily trying to outdo the scope of The Avengers, but that Iron Man 3 was all ?about trying to get as much into this as we can? were more than just lip service.

Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man 3

With a return to Tony Stark?s roots, buddy cop comedy between Tony and Rhodey, and now rumors of an introduction to Wasp, Black?s got his hands full.

As a testament to how much fans will get out of Iron Man 3, Downey didn?t even mention those plot lines in his praise for the cast. Sir Ben Kingsley won?t shock anyone by swinging for the fences, but it?s former-director Jon Favreau?s turn as Happy Hogan that is most impressing the leading man:

?Happy has an amazing arc in this movie. In fact, probably the best two bits of acting in the movie, so far from what I can tell?which sucks because I?m in every frame, are Favreau as Happy Hogan?I can?t give away much, but it?s ridiculous. And also Sir Ben Kingsley. Kingsley is amazing. And a lot of that had to do with the way that Shane crafted the role for Sir Ben. I think that people are going to be not [totally] surprised, but they?re going to be just reinvested in what a brilliant actor Kingsley is.?

There?s been no shortage of praise for Sir Ben Kingsley?s role as the Mandarin, with Marvel head Kevin Feige claiming he received more overwhelming praise from the crew than any other actor in Marvel?s ?Phase One.? And if the story driving the film as a whole is as strong as it seems, then Marvel?s first dose of ?Phase Two? has the talent and direction needed for a strong start.

Iron Man 3 Ben Kingsley Mandarin Praised

How do you feel about Shane Black?s apparent changes to the typical superhero formula? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Iron Man 3?is directed by Shane Black, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Drew Pearce. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce,?Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale, Xueqi Wang and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3?releases May 3rd, 2013,?Thor: The Dark World?on November 8th, 2013,?Captain America: The Winter Soldier?on April 4th, 2014,?Guardians of the Galaxy?on?August 1st, 2014,?The Avengers 2?on May 1st, 2015 and?Ant-Man?on November 6th, 2015.

Amazon inks exclusive Prime Instant Video deal ... - The Next Web

Less than a week after Amazon announced that its Prime Instant Video service was arriving for Apple?s iPhone and iPod touch, the Internet giant has revealed it has inked exclusive licensing deals with Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for two TNT?s series.

The series in question are Falling Skies (Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood) via Turner, and The Closer (Kyra Sedgwick, Jon Tenney) courtesy of Warner.

Amazon Instant Video is a digital video streaming and download service that lets users rent, buy or subscribe to a range of video content. Launched in April last year, Prime Instant Video is its video subscription service which makes tens of thousands of movies and TV shows available to stream. It?s free to those who subscribe to its 2-day shipping service Amazon Prime, charged at an annual rate.

Over the past 12 months, Amazon has announced a slew of content agreements with every major Hollywood studio, as well as some of the major cable networks. And back in September it brought EPIX on board, which will see thousands of new titles added to its arsenal ? including? The Avengers, Iron Man 2, The Hunger Games, Transformers, Dark of the Moon, Thor and Rango.

What?s interesting about this latest deal with Turner and Warner, however,? is the exclusive aspect of it. It seems more operators in the space are moving towards trying to secure exclusive access to content, as they try to set themselves apart from the competition. Indeed, only recently Netflix scored a US subscription exclusive to Disney?s first-run films in a multi-year deal, and we can expect to see the word ?exclusive? appear in many more content deals moving forward.

?Amazon has proven to be a terrific distribution platform for our popular television titles and we are confident that The Closer will also meet with that same success,? says Ken Werner, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. ?There will be 109 episodes of this riveting drama available for fans to enjoy for the very first time or to rewatch their favorite episodes from TNT.?

Prime Instant Video now features more than 30,000 movies and TV episodes for Amazon Prime members to stream on Kindle Fire HD, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Wii U.

Eric Corliss Reviews November 2012 Bathhouse Events | EMU ...

On November 28 and 29 two Bathhouse reading events took place in the auditorium of Roosevelt hall on campus.? There were three authors in the event, beginning with a reading on the afternoon of the 28th and a panel discussion including audience questions on the 29th.

The reading began with Dmitri Anastasopoulos, a professor of English at the University of Buffalo.? Unlike most of the Bathhouse guests I have seen, Dmitri is a novelist, not a poet.? Still, the piece of his novel-in-progress that he read to us was rather poetic in sound.? It was not dry, straightforward prose by any means.? The character he focused on seemed to be going back and forth through his life, or at least this section was composed mostly of recollection and flashback, so that the story seemed fragmented even as it followed a clear thematic path.? It was pretty good, I would be interested in reading more of his work.

Camille Roy read from two sources, a piece of work she is currently working on and her previously published book of poetry, Sherwood Forest.? I read Sherwood Forest before coming to the reading, so her poetry was familiar to me, but still difficult to grasp.? She spoke in the panel about how she tries to make her poetry accessible to everyone, so that someone without the experience and knowledge in experimental poetry can still get enjoyment and feeling out of her work, but to be honest I mostly found myself struggling to keep up.? Her use of words is very unusual, so that it never sounds like prose, but has none of the qualities of traditional poetry.? It just seemed opaque to me, but that may be because of my own biases.? I have never been good at experimental poetry, it often goes over my head.? It feels like, despite Camille?s efforts, that I would need to know exactly where she was coming from to have any hope of understanding her.? I get very little of the emotion behind her words, just the nonsense of the words themselves.

This has unfortunately been the case too often in my time at Eastern.? The Creative Writing department here is mostly made up of avant garde poets, and I have always aspired to be a fiction writer.? Dmitri Anastasopoulos was rather obtuse and nonlinear in his reading, but at least it was recognizable, with characters and the actions they took and thoughts they experienced.? I was able to connect much better with him than with the other two presenters.

Speaking of which, Rachel Levitsky was the third author there, and she was at least easier to understand than Camille Roy.? Still unusual and far from straightforward, but I did get a sense of what she was going for.? As she read from her book Neighbor I had an odd feeling of the space she was creating, a sort of cramped interior, lived in and used up but still vibrant with human life.? It was rather pleasant to hear, actually.

The more interesting event was the next day at the discussion panel.? It began with three presentations from the authors on stage.? Rachel Levitsky?s was interesting, I like the idea she was getting at.? An important fact of our urban existence is decay, and forgetting about whatever is old and no longer exciting.? It?s an interesting thought she put forth, that as we lose sight of the locations we have built, we also forget what they meant historically, culturally, and in regards to the literature they are connected with.? These are non-renewable resources, and so rediscovering them before they are gone for good is a worthy goal.

Camille Roy?s presentation was about obscurity.? What she means by this is the way our own language is used and where it came from.? Any word in the English language comes with centuries of etymological history, changes in connotation and meaning and cultural significance.? You can?t use a word without summoning a vast backstory, but most people are very insensitive to these arcane facts of language.? Camille pointed out that poetry used to be almost a separate language from actual speech, accessible only by the aristocracy.? Her goal is to further the purpose of making poetry more universal; even though it is difficult, it is still inclusive despite its obscurity, as long as one is interested in it and willing to work to understand it.? I have certainly experienced this myself in the Eastern Creative Writing program.? I was quite unfamiliar with such obscure forms of poetry before I came here, and I have learned a lot about how to dig into it and get new things out of it.? It?s frustrating at times, but I will admit to an expanded understanding of poetry and writing in general thanks to this program.

Dmitri Anastasopoulos went on at length about a lot of things.? His main idea, I think, was about how narrative permeates our lives; it is not just a technique of literature that exists in print and not in the real world.? I tried to write down everything he said, but honestly I couldn?t keep up.? He spoke a lot about how virtual worlds in online video games show us things about communities and groups of people that we can?t measure in the real world, and how a lot of it seems counter-intuitive.? He spoke about economic theories, and how they are sometimes poorly constructed because of the way people think in terms of narrative; a narrative is rather personal, and however epic or large scale it may be, it comes down to individual characters, which is not the way an economy works, thus these theories are often suspect.? Yeah, it was long and twisting and complicated; interesting, but hard to contain here or even remember in this review.

I?ve been to many Bathhouse readings in 3 years at Eastern, but I think this one was honestly my favorite.? All three authors were interesting, even if they were sometimes long-winded or hard to follow.? The reading on the 28th was interesting for the questions it prompted in me to myself.? I have never read anything of my own publicly, not to a room larger than my own classes.? The social space they have to be aware of when they choose what to read and how to read it is something I have not experienced, and I think I would have to before I can really grasp its implications.? So basically, I need to get myself out there, get more experience in community interaction regarding my own art.? Unless I want to be J. D. Salinger and cut off any interaction with the literary world at large, I need to start thinking about these things.

Alternative Power Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey for the Home | Womens ...

The trend toward houses that happen to be powered by alternative energy sources, ranging from wind turbines and solar collection cells to hydrogen fuel cells and biomass gases, is one that needs to carry on to the 21st century and past. We?ve wonderful want of becoming more energy independent, and not having to rely on the supplying of fossil fuels from unstable nations that are usually hostile to us and our interests. But even beyond this issue, we as individuals have to get off the grid as well as stop getting to become so reliant on government-lobbying giant oil firms who, while these are not actually involved in any covert conspiracy, nonetheless possess a stranglehold on people in relation to heating their homes (and if not by way of oil, then heat normally supplied by grid-driven electrical energy, one more stranglehold).

As Remi Wilkinson, Senior Analyst with Carbon Free, puts it, inevitably, the growth of distributed generation will result in the restructuring in the retail electrical power market as well as the generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. The energy providers could have to diversify their company to produce up for revenues lost via household power microgeneration. She is referring to the conclusions by a group of UK analysts, herself incorporated Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey amongst them, who call themselves Carbon Free of charge. Carbon Free of charge continues to be learning the ever-growing trend toward option energy-using houses in England and also the West. This trend is becoming driven by ever-more government recommendation and at times backing of choice energy research and advancement, the rising cost of oil as well as other fossil fuels, concern about environmental degradation, and desires to be energy independent. Carbon Cost-free concludes that, assuming traditional power rates remain at their present degree or rise, microgeneration (meeting all of one?s home?s energy requirements by putting in substitute energy engineering such as solar panels or wind turbines) will become to residence power provide what the web grew to become to house communications and information gathering, and ultimately this will likely have deep effects on the companies in the current power supply firms.

Carbon Free?s analyses also display that power Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey firms themselves have jumped in on the game and seek out to leverage microgeneration to their own benefit for opening up new markets for themselves. Carbon Free of charge cites the illustration of electrical power businesses (within the UK) reporting that these are seriously studying and establishing concepts for new geothermal energy facilities, as these companies see geothermal power production like a very rewarding wave in the long term. An additional conclusion of Carbon Totally free is the fact that solar power hot water heating technologies is an effective technologies for lowering house water heating charges within the long run, despite the fact that it really is initially very pricey to install. Nonetheless, solar energy just isn?t but cost-effective for corporations, as they demand Victor Cruz Jersey too considerably in the method of specialized plumbing to implement solar energy hot water heating. Lastly, Carbon Free of charge tells us that putting in wind turbines is definitely an effective way of minimizing residence electricity charges, while also being more independent. Nevertheless, once again this really is initially a very costly issue to possess set up, and companies would do effectively to start slashing their costs on these gadgets or they could discover themselves losing market place share.

Health Care - Acne, Fitness, Diabetes Center Advice and Tips Is ...

People who snore may be embarrassed about discussing the matter. So because no one talks about snoring, there is little widespread knowledge about how to alleviate it. Yet, this article is here to help you with just that, use the advice from this article and learn what you can do to rid yourself of snoring as you sleep.

Exercise your tongue regularly. It may sound comical, but you can actually exercise your tongue by sticking it in and out of your mouth. Stick your tongue out and then make it rigid. Then, point it in different directions. Make certain you are hitting all four points on the compass during the exercise. The muscles in your tongue will become toned and you will be less likely to snore.

Sleeping pills or alcohol can help you to sleep, but it?s not a good way to try to stop snoring. Both of these cause the muscles to relax a lot, including the ones in your throat, which means you will snore more, and more loudly than before. You should talk to a doctor about any trouble you have sleeping.

Adjust your time for eating routine if snoring is an issue. Have a small meal for dinner and eat it early. Eating rich foods, as well as dairy products, can lead to more mucus buildup. You should also try drinking tea with honey before you go to sleep to help ease any strain or tension contained in your throat.

Consider eating a tablespoon of honey before you go to bed. It is unclear as to why it seems to work, but many testify to honey?s effectiveness in reducing your tendency to snore. This is not really that surprising when you think of the myriad of other applications honey has in folk medicine.

To stop snoring, you must discover the reason you are snoring to begin with. For instance, certain health issues cause snoring and without getting them treated, it won?t go away. In fact, it could even get worse.

The proper amount of sleep can help to reduce your snoring. It is also important to maintain a sleep schedule that is consistent, in addition to getting enough sleep. Go to sleep and wake up on the same schedule every day of the week.

Quit smoking by any means necessary. Smoking any tobacco products will harm your respiratory system, resulting in serious health problems, not least of which includes chronic snoring. If you quit, your lungs and throat will heal and your health issues and snoring will lessen.

Try snoring strips to cut down on snoring and get a better night of sleep. A simple strip of adhesive paper will lie on your nose, pulling your nostrils up and allowing more fresh air to enter your airway. These nasal strips are used by certain pro athletes to increase their performance, so it?s worth trying them out!

Sleep on your side, not your back. Sleeping on your back causes your throat to relax and can cause your soft palate to drop. This means that you will snore even more. The optimal sleeping position for chronic snorers is on their sides, but any position beats sleeping face-up.

Just as you learned from the beginning of this article, not that many people discuss the subject of snoring. You can now feel more comfortable discussing snoring as it will be a thing of the past once you use the tips you?ve read here!
