0 - Scared Stiff Reviews

By Melissa Garza

Often remakes are absolutely awful, complete letdowns, and mere shells of the original film. It is impossible to improve on a Vincent Price masterpiece. Vincent was the epitome of creepiness and represented what horror films should be, and thankfully ?House on Haunted Hill? recognizes this. This movie is meant to put a new spin on an old classic and all the while pays homage to the actor who started it all.

The lead character is even named Stephen H. Price (Geoffrey Rush). Rush does a fine job portraying the rich, thrill seeking, amusement park owner, who is throwing his unappreciative, adulterous wife, Evelyn (Famke Janssen), at a closed down mental institution notorious for torturing their patients.

Invitations are mysteriously switched and, instead of Evelyn?s friends, a group of strangers are brought to the hospital with a promise of winning one million dollars for surviving the night. Upon arrival, the horrors begin immediately. The doors and windows go into lock-down mode, all exits are closed, and the entire party is trapped in the confines of the house on haunted hill.

Most believe that the strange occurrences are orchestrated by Stephen, and some are; but others are signs and warnings of things to come by the sinister powers that control the hospital. The only one who is immediately terrified by the house itself is the inherited owner Watson Pritchett (Chris Kattan). Kattan is wonderful in this role. Hopeless and completely assured that everyone is going to die, he gets drunk and offers sarcastic remarks when anyone attempts to form a plan of escape. He knows the history and knows what the place is capable of, and therefore he is resolved to the idea of disaster, torture and failure.

By far one of the scariest movies in the past fifteen years, ?House on Haunted Hill,? is filled with terrifying imagery, great dialogue, above par acting and most importantly never forgets to be fun.

The original is a classic, but the remake is strong, complimentary and definitely something to watch with the lights on.

Kentz Expects 2012 Earnings to Meet Expectations

Kentz Corporation Limited, the holding company of the Kentz engineering and construction group, released the following interim management statement for the period 1 July to 11 November 2012.

Overview

  • Growth underpinned through new project awards together with natural growth on existing contracts
  • Backlog at the end of September 2012 was US$2.53bn (July 2012: US$2.54bn) (October 2011: US$2.38bn)
  • Prospect pipeline increased to US$13.1bn
  • Expect to deliver 2012 earnings in line with current market expectations
  • US$50 million shutdown services and operations support contract with Exxon Neftegas
  • Construction business unit recently won a further contract with Kenmare Resources on the Moma Sands mining project
  • Nearing completion on the EPC contract for the Gorgon construction village
  • Delivered 33.9 million man-hours with a total recordable incident rate of 0.22
  • Appointment of Tush Doshi as Chief Operating Officer of the EPC business unit
  • Interim dividend of 5.5 US cents paid in October, an increase of 10% on 2011

Christian Brown, Chief Executive of Kentz, said: ?We continue to perform well across our global operations and expect to deliver 2012 earnings in line with current market expectations. We are confident that our backlog and current prospects will continue to support double digit earnings growth in 2013.

?Kentz?s clients include a number of the world?s leading natural resource companies, on some of the world?s largest natural resource projects, and we have an excellent foundation on which to further globalise our Construction and TSS business units and increase both our capability and addressable market for our EPC business.?

Operational Update

The company?s operations throughout 29 countries performed well in the second half of the year to date.

In Western Australia, the company is nearing completion of the EPC contract for the Gorgon construction village. The companywill follow this in mid-2013 with the completion of the EPC project for the Gorgon telecoms package on Barrow Island. Although activity on the Gorgon MEI contract has been below expectations, the company does not expect any impact on its 2012 results and along with its client the company continues to focus on first LNG at the end of 2014.

Elsewhere in Australia, the company continues to work on the QGC LNG and Ichthys LNG projects following awards earlier this year for its Technical Support Services (TSS) and EPC business
units. Kentz remains focused on opportunities in the region for projects that it has received final investment decision (FID).

The company?s operations in North and South America have produced solid results to date in 2012 where its Construction and TSS business units have been executing projects on the Kearl Oil Sands projects for Imperial Oil, the Aurora Mine Relocation (AMR) project for Syncrude, Barrick Mine in the Dominican Republic and on a number of other smaller projects. The company continues to evaluate further opportunities in the Americas, in particular in Canada where considerable investments are expanding the development of the country?s oil sands resources.

Kentz has a number of established operations across Africa, where its Construction and TSS business units remain strong. The company maintains a strong relationship with Sasol in South Africa which the company has developed over the past 30 years. Kentz continues to execute projects under the five year shutdown management and execution services contract, signed in 2011, at Natref?s flagship inland crude refinery in Sasolburg along with the provision of structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and piping (?MEIP) construction services for Sasol?s GHHER expansion project.

The company?s EPC business unit has recently been awarded a US$45 million contract with Scatec Solar, for the 75MWp Kalkbult Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project in the Northern Cape area of South Africa. This is a good award for the company?s EPC business unit and a key project for South African energy that positions Kentz well for further work in the renewable space.

In Mozambique, the company?s Construction business unit recently won a further contract with Kenmare Resources on the Moma Sands mining project. Kentz has been working on this project since 2008 and is pleased to have won further work as part of the on-going expansion project. The company also continues to provide construction services to Vale on the Moatize Coal Plant following the successful completion of Phase 1 of this project earlier this year.

The rapid growth of the company?s businesses around the world has overshadowed the continued progress in the Middle East which is still a core and important market for Kentz and the company continues to provide many services to important clients throughout the region. The company?s core markets of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait continue to produce many opportunities for Kentz, in addition to providing centres of engineering excellence, and the company sees further bidding activity in newer locations such as Iraq.

The company?s? recent award of shutdown services and operations support contract with Exxon Neftegas Ltd in Far East Russia reaffirms its ability to deliver projects successfully for the company?s clients in Arctic conditions. Kentz has opened an office in Moscow to enable the company to focus on developments in western and northern Russia where the process of monetising the vast hydrocarbon resources in the Kara and Black Seas present new opportunities for Kentz.

Israel, Gaza militants trade fire in escalation

JERUALEM (AP) ? Israeli forces struck targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing one Palestinian and wounding more than 30 others as militants launched dozens of rockets in some of the heaviest fighting the area has seen in months.

The flare-up increased pressure on the Israeli government to put an end to the violence, which escalated over the weekend and could turn into a major conflagration just two months before the country's general election.

Israeli leaders quickly amped up their rhetoric, warning Gaza's Islamic Hamas rulers they will pay a heavy price should they allow rocket fire toward Israel to continue.

"The world must understand that Israel will not sit idly in the face of attempts to attack us," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "We are prepared to intensify the response."

Low-level cross-border fighting is common in the border area, but clashes escalated Thursday night when an explosives-packed tunnel under the Gaza-Israel frontier blew up, in what the Israeli military called an attempt by Palestinian militants to kill or kidnap soldiers. Palestinians said the blast was a roadside bomb to avenge the death of an 11-year-old boy who was shot dead earlier in the evening during an exchange of fire with Israelis.

Then on Saturday, militants fired an anti-tank missile into an Israeli military jeep patrolling the border fence, wounding four soldiers ? one critically. Casualties of that order are rare for the Israeli military in clashes with Gaza militants.

In response, Israel launched airstrikes that have killed six Gazans and wounded almost 40. Palestinian rocket and mortar barrages have wounded four Israeli civilians and kept a large swath of the country running for cover. The military said more than 80 rockets had landed in Israel and 12,000 Israeli students stayed home from school on Sunday. Later in the day, the military said a Palestinian rocket made a direct hit on an Israeli home in the town of Sderot. No injuries were reported.

Yael Talker, a resident of Kibbutz Reim in southern Israel, said her family spent the night in a makeshift shelter in their home.

"Each time the alarms ring, we hope it's the last," she said. "Our patience is running out ... when we sleep, we dream about bombs. It must stop."

Nearly four years ago, before the last national election, Israel carried out a broad military offensive in Gaza to stop years of rocket fire. Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the operation, including hundreds of civilians. Since then, sporadic rocket fire has continued, but Gaza's Hamas rulers have largely refrained from major rocket attacks.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was assessing the situation. He rejected the suggestion that Israel's upcoming Jan. 22 elections could affect the government's response to the current round of violence.

"I don't think the elections have to have any effect on our response," he said. "It shouldn't cause us to refrain from acting, it's not handcuffing us. But it shouldn't provoke us to take an opportunity to launch an operation."

Later, following more rocket attacks, he struck an even stronger tone.

"The upcoming elections in Israel are not and will not be a source of immunity for Hamas," he said in Tel Aviv. "We will strike with an ever-growing intensity. ... If we are forced to go back into Gaza in order to deal Hamas a blow and restore security for all of Israel's citizens, then we will not hesitate to do so."

Hamas' military wing acknowledged taking part in the weekend rocket fire but it accused Netanyahu's hardline government of escalating the violence in order to win votes in January elections.

"The Israeli government is responsible for all the consequences and implications of its escalation," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum. "Hamas will not let Palestinian blood be a price for Israeli political and electoral gains."

Israel considers Hamas responsible for all violence that comes from Gaza, but Hamas' active participation in the fighting could prompt Israel to respond more harshly to the attacks.

In a precautionary measure, Hamas evacuated major security installations in fear of an Israeli attack. But political leaders and government officials worked in their offices as usual.

While it remains virulently anti-Israel, Hamas has largely refrained from major attacks over the past four years. It has also sought to keep things quiet as it consolidates control in the territory, which it seized five years ago in a violent takeover.

It is under pressure, however, from smaller militant groups in Gaza to prove it continues to uphold its armed resistance to Israel, and it sometimes joins the hostilities.

The coastal strip is home to numerous militant groups, including murky al-Qaida-inspired organizations that do not answer to Hamas. Gaza has also been flooded with weapons in recent years, many of them believed to have been smuggled from northern Africa and into Gaza through tunnels under the Egyptian border.

Afghan massacre suspect returned to base bloodied

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, charged with killing 16 Afghan villagers as they slept, appears in a Washington state military courtroom Monday. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at?6:45 p.m. ET: In pretrial hearings for U.S. Army Sgt. Robert Bales, accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers in a nighttime massacre in March, prosecutors described to a military court on Monday how the sergeant allegedly returned to his base in Kandahar province with the blood of his victims on his rifle, belt, shirt and shoes and then seemed stunned to be confronted by fellow soldiers.

Bales sat quietly in the courtroom at Joint Base Lewis-McChord?in Washington state as military prosecutors summarized the events of March 11 when they allege the 39-year-old sergeant walked off his base in Kandahar province under cover of darkness and opened fire on civilians ? mostly women and children ? in their homes in at least two villages.

Prosecutor Lt. Col Jay Morse said?Bales had been drinking and briefly visited the room of a fellow soldier before he left the Army post, called Camp Belambay, and went to a village where he committed the first set of slayings.

Morse said Bales then returned to the camp, told some others what he had done and left again, moving on to a different village and committing additional killings. He called Bales' actions "deliberate, methodical."

The prosecution also showed a video shot by night-vision camera from a surveillance balloon over the camp, showing a figure they identified as Bales walking back to the post wearing what they described as a cape.

The man is seen being confronted by three soldiers, who order him to drop his weapons and take him into custody as he is heard saying, "Are you @!$%#ing kidding me?"

Karilyn Bales, the wife of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, spoke exclusively with NBC's Matt Lauer, telling the TODAY anchor that the news about her husband is 'very unbelievable.'

Cpl. David Godwin, who was among the first to encounter Bales after the alleged shootings, also testified on Monday, describing the meeting as "kind of surreal," the Seattle Times reported.

Godwin, who served under Bales, was one of the people who had been drinking with him on March 10, the night before the killings. He?told the court that while they drank, they watched the 2004 movie "Man on Fire," which stars Denzel Washington and is about a CIA operative turned bodyguard who goes on a killing rampage after his child is kidnapped.

After that, Godwin said, he believed Bales went to bed, the Times reported, but learned otherwise when another soldier awakened him at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., and the two of them went to the post's outer gate looking for Bales. They finally spotted him returning to base sometime before 5 a.m., Godwin told the court.

"I kind of thought that Bob (Bales) thought... he was doing this to better us," said Godwin, according to the Times. He quoted Bales as saying: "I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought I was doing the right thing."

The shooting, which if proven at trial would be the worst civilian slaughter by U.S. forces since the Vietnam War, eroded already-strained U.S.-Afghan ties after over a decade of conflict in the country.

Bales faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of assault and wrongfully possessing and using steroids and alcohol while deployed. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

The hearing?is expected to?last two weeks and include witness testimony carried by live video from Afghanistan, including villagers and Afghan soldiers. Part of the hearing will be held at night due to the time difference.

At the end, military commanders will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to refer the case for trial by court-martial.

'Sanity board'
Morse said he would present evidence proving "chilling premeditation" on the part of Bales.

John Henry Browne, Bales' civilian lawyer, has suggested that Bales may not have acted alone and may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Bales is a decorated veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bales also has two military defense counselors, Maj. Gregory Malson and Capt. Matthew Aeisi. Malson represented Army Sgt. William Kreutzer, who was sentenced to life in prison three years ago for killing an officer and wounding 18 U.S. soldiers in a 1995 shooting spree during a training session at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Separately, Bales is also subject to a review of his mental fitness to stand trial, often referred to as a "sanity board." The Army has not disclosed the status of that review.

The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., appeared with his head shaved, dressed in Army fatigues. He embraced his wife in court before the hearing started.

The investigating officer read the charges against Bales and informed him of his rights. Bales said, "Sir, yes, sir," when asked if he understood them. He was not expected to answer questions in the hearings.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

The March shooting highlighted discipline problems among U.S. soldiers from Lewis-McChord, which was also the home base of five enlisted men from the former 5th Stryker Brigade charged with premeditated murder in connection with three killings of unarmed Afghan civilians in 2010.

Four of the men were convicted or pleaded guilty in court-martial proceedings to murder or manslaughter charges and were sentenced to prison. Charges against the fifth were dropped.

In August, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta directed a panel of experts to assess whether reforms were needed in the way the military justice system handles crimes committed by U.S. forces against civilians in combat zones.
