Eyes-on with Cornell University's laser tag dunebots (video)

Cornell University may be the host of the Cornell Cup competition, but that doesn't mean it can't bring its own robots to join in on the fun. This year, students brought along a few bots, dubbed dunebots, outfitted with all-terrain wheels and equipped with laser tag turrets. The rugged rig features a pair of cameras, a dustproof and water resistant chassis, air intakes capped with filters, and other custom components for suspension and steering. Not only does the team plan on releasing code and documentation for the project, but the hardware was designed with modularity in mind, so others can build their own modified versions.

Taking the robot into battle requires two pilots armed with Xbox 360 controllers: one directing where it travels, and another aiming the turret and firing. Driving the buggy over the web is also possible, though it takes a few seconds for it to react. The group also baked in voice controls, to boot. If you're not watching the car duke it out in person, you can even tune in over the web and watch a live video stream from one of its onboard cams. Its top speeds haven't been firmly nailed down, but the team says the bot was running at approximately 35 percent of its full potential, since it was deemed too fast for conference attendees. Hit the jump to catch us talk with the effort's Computer Science lead Mike Dezube, and to see a dunebot in action.

Saudi Arabia reports 7 cases of SARS-like virus

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry said Thursday that five people have died and two other patients were in critical condition with confirmed cases of a new respiratory virus related to SARS.

The ministry said in a statement that it had informed the World Health Organization of the seven new cases of novel coronavirus.

The germ is from a family of viruses that cause the common cold, as well as SARS ? the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic. Health experts still aren't sure how humans are being infected. The new coronavirus, which can cause acute pneumonia and kidney failure, is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats or other animals like goats or camels are a possible source of infection.

Since September 2012, WHO has been informed of 24 confirmed cases. Sixteen of the patients died.

The new virus was first identified last year in the Middle East and several of the people infected had all traveled to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Pakistan.

WHO says the virus is probably more widespread than just the Middle East and has advised countries to test any people with unexplained pneumonia. In Saudi Arabia last year, four members of the same family fell ill and two died.

The Saudi government is conducting an ongoing investigation into the outbreak.

The seven people who contracted the virus are not from the same family and there is no indication that any of them were in contact with animals or had traveled recently.

Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam appears briefly in court

By Ghaith Shennib

ZINTAN, Libya (Reuters) - Saif al-Islam, a son of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, appeared in court on Thursday in the town of Zintan, where he had been held since his capture by former rebels in November 2011.

Saif al-Islam, at the center of a legal tussle between Libya and the International Criminal Court (ICC), smiled and told reporters he was in good health during his brief appearance.

The powerful armed group in Zintan, which spearheaded the capture of Tripoli from Gaddafi's forces in August 2011, has insisted on keeping Saif al-Islam imprisoned in the town, about 140 km (90 miles) southwest of the Libyan capital.

Once Gaddafi's presumed heir, Saif al-Islam is wanted by the ICC on war crimes charges, but the case to be heard in Zintan relates to charges that he gave information to an ICC lawyer last year that could endanger national security.

He was the only defendant of 13 people who were called to appear in court on those charges, confirming he was in the room when his name was called out and that his lawyers were present.

The case was then postponed until September 19 because the defense's case was incomplete.

The ICC lawyer, Australian Melinda Taylor, was herself detained for three weeks after a meeting in which Saif al-Islam is accused of handing over sensitive papers and information.

Taylor, who had been appointed by the ICC to act as Saif al-Islam's defense lawyer, has said her detention proved he could not get a fair trial in Libya.

"These documents as I understand it were nothing more than Saif expressing a preference to be tried by the ICC," said John Jones, the lawyer appointed by Saif al-Islam's family to defend him before the international court.

He added that the national security charges Saif al-Islam faced were "the antithesis of justice," and said Libyan authorities had violated his right to speak to a defense lawyer by seizing the documents and detaining Taylor.

ICC lawyers also note that he could face the death penalty if convicted in the North African state - an outcome that would be welcome to many Libyans who suffered under Gaddafi's 42-year rule and in the revolt that toppled him.

LIBYAN INDICTMENT PENDING

Libya, which wants to try Saif al-Islam itself, has yet to indict him for war crimes, although the public prosecutor has said a case is being prepared and will soon go to court.

Libyan lawyer Ahmed al-Jehani, who liaises between the ICC and the Tripoli government, said he expected the ICC to decide in May whether Libya can handle Saif al-Islam's trial and that of Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi.

"We have submitted a great deal of evidence and documentation to convince them we are able," Jehani told Reuters, adding that the dossier included medical reports, confessions and witness statements.

"No one can say whether he will get the death penalty," he said when asked if Saif al-Islam was at risk of being executed in Libya. "It is up to the judge," he added.

Senussi was handed over to Libya by Mauritania in September after his arrest in Nouakchott in March 2011 started a tug of war between Libya, France and the ICC for his extradition.

Jehani said Taylor, the ICC lawyer, who was among the 13 charged in Zintan on Thursday, could be tried in absentia.

The ICC, which is only allowed to try cases if national legal systems are unable or unwilling to deal with them, declined to comment on the proceedings in Zintan.

The president of Libya's Human Rights Commission pointed to Saif al-Islam's appearance as an indication he was being looked after in jail and could be tried fairly within the country.

"As you can see he is in good health... I can assure you he is being treated well and I wish that all of Libya's detainees could have the same treatment," Mohammad al-Alagi told a news conference in Zintan.

HTC marketing blitz to squeeze 2013 margins

By Clare Jim

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp will struggle to improve its margins this year as it increases marketing spend for its latest model in a bid to catch up to rivals Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc.

HTC on Thursday forecast strong sales of its flagship HTC One smartphone to lift second-quarter revenues by almost two-thirds to T$70 billion ($2.37 billion).

Operating margins were also expected to widen to between 1 and 3 percent from the previous quarter's 0.1 percent, as HTC spends more on a campaign to improve its brand image. HTC's third-quarter 2012 operating margins were 7 percent.

"We're improving the HTC marketing execution. It's the first time since HTC developed its brand that we are really integrating brand, product and marketing all together," HTC Chief Executive Peter Chou told an investor conference call.

He did not give specific figures but the company said in March its digital media marketing budget for the first half of this year would increase 250 percent year-on-year, while the budget for traditional media will double.

Investors, however, were cautious about the HTC One's longer-term prospects as both Apple and Samsung have much deeper pockets and are more established brands.

"Samsung basically cornered the whole supply chain. To me, HTC is more of a product story: good product, higher stock price," said Hong Kong-based portfolio manager Michiel Van Voorst, who manages $1.2 billion in Asian equities for Robeco.

"I think investors will be a bit more reluctant now to price the stock at earnings that have not yet materialized," added Van Voorst, who substantially cut his holdings in HTC late last year after the company repeatedly missed profit forecasts.

The HTC One, currently available in five countries including China, runs a version of Google Inc's Android software that allows users to customize their homescreen.

Research firm Daiwa Capital, in a recent report, said HTC One was one of the top-five best selling smartphones offered by U.S. carriers and that it was out of stock at some operators and retailers in Britain, Germany and Taiwan.

KGI Securities analyst Richard Ko believes this popularity may be short-lived.

"While we think HTC's shipments will rebound strongly in Q2, we also think Samsung and other second tier players will continue to exert pressure on HTC," he said. "We remain cautious because of HTC's execution capability and long-term structural weaknesses."

Delays in the full launch of the HTC One due to a shortage of a camera component led HTC to report a record-low net profit in the previous quarter.

Future sales volumes were also thrown into doubt after rival Nokia Oyj won a court injunction last week that would prevent HTC from using microphone components made by STMicroelectronics NV in HTC One phones.

HTC has said it does not expect the decision to have any immediate impact on sales, and that it will find other suppliers once its inventory of STMicroelectronics microphones runs out.

HTC was the world's 10th-biggest smartphone maker by shipments in the fourth quarter, according to IT research firm Gartner, jostling in a crowded field behind Samsung and Apple.

Shares in HTC have slipped 1.8 percent this year, underperforming the broader market's 5.6 percent rise. On Thursday, HTC shares closed down 2 percent compared to a 0.43 percent rise in the main share index.
