PSA: Kindle iOS app users should not update to version 3.6.1

PSA iOS Kindle users should not update to version 361

This one's coming straight from the horse's mouth. Amazon is acknowledging a "known issue" with version 3.6.1 of its Kindle app for iOS -- the company is recommending that current users avoid the latest update, which hit the App Store today. According to TUAW, the new version may completely erase a user's book library. How this passed the e-book giant's QA team is anyone's guess, but until a revision hits the cloud, we suggest you stay away.

Skype update brings back 'classic' UI option for tablets

Skype Interface

Skype has just been updated to give users the option of selecting a "classic" UI instead of the new and improved tablet interface. The previous update to Skype added many new features and a more tablet-optimized interface overall, including a portrait UI for calling -- the curious part was the rest of the app was still locked in landscape mode. Skype is now backpedaling, sort of, by letting tablet users go back to a phone-style UI in the settings if they prefer. The new option is probably a better choice if you're on a smaller screen like the Nexus 7 that is often used in portrait.

10-inch tablet users are still better off with the new "tablet" UI because the larger devices are quite comical in portrait mode. Until Skype figures out how to do a responsive tablet UI that changes appropriately for landscape and portrait use, it's good to have this option. You can grab the update from the Play Store link at the top of this post.

(AP) ? Miguel Diaz-Canel has five years to get started and a lot of work to do.

The man tapped as Cuban President Raul Castro's chief lieutenant and likely successor must quietly fend off any challenges from within the Communist-run island's secretive citadel of power.

He must gain legitimacy with young, and even middle-aged, Cubans who have never known a leader not named Castro. And he must deal with an exiled diaspora and American officials who were already making clear on Monday they will not be mollified by a new, younger face.

"There's going to be a huge charisma deficit," said Ann Louise Bardach, author of "Without Fidel: A Death Foretold in Miami, Havana and Washington." ''You go from Fidel to Raul who at least had some of the shine of the Castro mantle, somebody who fought in the revolution."

She said Cuba faces "massive" problems including a large public debt, dependence on Venezuela, an aging population, decades of brain drain and one of the world's slowest Internet connections.

Whether Diaz-Canel is the man to fix all that is very much open to debate. Will Cubans accept another leader who was hand-picked from above and whose ascension ? if it happens ? will not come through multiparty democratic elections?

And will those passed over for the top job fall in line? If Fidel and Raul Castro are still alive, will the 52-year-old electrical engineer and former minister of higher education be able to set his own course?

On the streets of Havana, a day after Castro accepted a new term and said he would step down when it ends, many had their doubts about the future.

"Change? Was there a change?" asked Ernesto Silva, a 25-year-old student who scoffed at the idea that the country must wait another five years for new leadership, and said he hopes to emigrate to the United States in the meantime. "I find it hard to believe that he will be able to do, say or truly change anything."

Others were more enthusiastic, but still unsure how Diaz-Canel will establish control.

"I think it is good. He is a new and young figure. But he was trained by the old guys," said Maria Quesada, a 45-year-old office worker. "We still can't talk about a government without Castro because he's still going to be there, and I think the true test for Diaz-Canel will be when his vision differs from Raul's."

Raul himself faced a similar challenge when he took over from the ailing Fidel in 2006. The younger Castro was seen as a bland and unassuming figure who had always operated in the shadow of his larger-than-life older brother.

But he has overseen a series of sweeping changes since then in an effort to right the country's ever-weak Marxist economy, expanding private enterprise, legalizing a real estate market and eliminating most travel restrictions.

Behind the scenes, Raul has led an anti-corruption campaign and replaced many of Fidel's confidantes with loyal military officials who earned his trust during his four plus decades as the nation's armed forces chief.

Observers say it is those men, who have been put in charge of important state-owned enterprises like the phone company, the enormous holding company Cimex and virtually the entire tourism industry, who Diaz-Canel must persuade to follow him.

"I'm sure he's shown himself to be acceptable to the military already, otherwise this would never have happened," said Paul Webster Hare, the British ambassador to Cuba from 2001 to 2004 and now a lecturer in international relations at Boston University. "He has to be acceptable to them."

In Washington on Monday, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the U.S. remained "hopeful for the day that the Cuban people get democracy, when they can have the opportunity to freely pick their own leaders."

"We're clearly not there yet," he added.

Ventrell said Cuba needed to do more to open up if it wants repaired relations with the United States.

Still, observers said the naming of a successor, along with the economic and social changes Castro has instituted, could eventually lead to detente, or at least an easing of bad blood.

"There is a psychological and political benefit to naming somebody now," said Julia Sweig, a Cuba expert at the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations. "It can demonstrate to the United States that there is an opportunity to change how we relate to this new Cuba."

Reaction to Diaz-Canel's promotion was met with a shrug by Cuban-American politicians who said that changing the nameplate outside the presidential office won't alter a system they see as repressive and undemocratic. And some analysts and exiles in South Florida questioned whether he will survive politically long enough to ever take control.

Little is known of Diaz-Canel's relationship with Cuba's other political or military elites, or his own personal ideology.

He is said to be a fan of the Beatles who in his youth wore his hair long at a time when both acts were considered anti-revolutionary. And a former colleague says he is a private jokester despite his somber public demeanor.

Like almost all Cuban politicians who earned their stripes by mastering the art of backroom party maneuvering, Diaz-Canel seems to have learned long ago that there was no benefit to putting himself in front of the cameras.

It was a lesson he probably learned back in 2002, when fellow young turk Roberto Robaina was dumped as foreign minister after being accused of "political and ethical errors."

Diaz-Canel, who was part of Robaina's circle, not only survived the purge and a subsequent one that took down the next foreign minister and a prominent young vice president ? but he appears to have thrived behind the scenes.

Robaina, who now paints pictures and runs a private restaurant in Havana, would not comment Monday on Diaz-Canel's rise. But a former colleague who has known Diaz-Canel since the 1980s said his career really began to take off after the purge.

In 2003, he was named head of the Communist Party in Holguin, a role he had held previously in his native Santa Clara. The same year, Raul Castro helped get him a seat on the Political Bureau, the island's equivalent of a Politburo.

The experience in Holguin was a trial by fire for Diaz-Canel, who had been popular in Santa Clara but met resistance in his new role.

"People didn't like him in Holguin," said the former colleague, who would speak only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. But he caught Castro's eye, and earned his praise.

"He has demonstrated a solid ideological firmness," Castro, who was then vice president himself, said of his protege, perhaps presaging his future rise.

Cuban officials insist that a post-Castro era will be no different and that the nation's institutions will unquestionably back the new prince. They point to a long history of exiles wrongly predicting the collapse of the revolution, which has so far survived the demise of the Soviet Union and retirement of Fidel Castro, not to mention Washington's 51-year economic embargo.

But Hare, the former ambassador, says it would be a mistake to underestimate the challenges Diaz-Canel would face getting state machinery and political rivals to fall in line.

"Does he have rivals in the 50-something generation in Cuba who perhaps resent what happened?" Hare asked. "There is a scenario where other people will be sensing ... that Diaz-Canel doesn't have all the attributes of the Castros and therefore (will ask) 'Why shouldn't I have a chance at it?'"

Review: Dark Skies | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi.com

Dark Skies is an alien abduction movie about a family trying to make sense of strange occurrences around their house. In a very Paranormal Activity way, the family starts noticing little things around their house like all half eaten piles of food around their kitchen, cups and plates piled, missing pictures, marks on their bodies, and flocks of birds crashing into their house. On top of that, the Barrett?s youngest son Sam (Kadan Rocket) is having nightmares and says he?s being visited at night by The Sandman.

Despite strange happenings that would lead most families to have their house exorcised, the parents (played by Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton) spend a large part of the film scratching their heads and asking questions. ?How many blackouts do you need before you start to realize something strange is happening? ?How many times do you need to see something standing over your child?s bed?

After what feels like the 100th crazy episode, Mrs. Barrett finally does what every person in the world would do ? Google it. Her internet search leads her to local man who thinks the family is being visited by aliens known as The Greys.

Dark Skies clocks in at 1hr 35 mins, but it takes so long for the film to get going making it feel like a 2 hour film. The slow paced isn?t helped by the boring story. There are no original scares, no original looking aliens, and the cookie cutter family consisting of the rebellious son, the innocent son, the parent who accepts what?s happening, and the parent who doesn?t believe.

The ?biggest issues is not how long it took the Barretts to do something about the invasion, or their oldest son?s snore worthy side story about his loser friend and a girl, but the problem is the way in which the family deals with alien abduction. Of all the ?protect my family? scenarios in cinema, the Barrett family in Dark Skies may have dealt with aliens the poorest. The Barrett family prepares like they?re taking on the Mexican Cartel and not extraterrestrials that have entered their house undetected for weeks.

Dark Skies ends with a twist/flashback combo that?s as interesting as doing taxes all night. For what it?s worth, Dark Skies could?ve been good but uninteresting aliens and silly characters make it an X-Files episode that was left on the cutting room floor at best.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Unnecessary Medical Procedures and the Dangers of Robot Surgery

Hugh Pickens writes "The LA Times reports that in a new report aimed at improving healthcare and controlling runaway costs, a coalition of leading medical societies has identified nearly 100 medical procedures, tests and therapies that are overused and often unnecessary. The medical interventions ? including early cesarean deliveries, CT scans for head injuries in children and annual Pap tests for middle-aged women ? may be necessary in some cases, but are often not beneficial and may even cause harm. 'We are very concerned about the rapidly escalating cost of healthcare,' says Dr. Bruce Sigsbee. 'This is not healthy for the country, and something has to be done.' Each of the specialty medical societies has provided a list of five procedures that physicians and patients should question about the overuse of medical tests and procedures that provide little benefit and in some cases harm. A 2012 report from the independent Institute of Medicine estimated total waste in the system at 30%, or $750 billion a year. 'Millions of Americans are increasingly realizing that when it comes to healthcare, more is not necessarily better,' says Dr. Christine K. Cassel." According to pigrabbitbear, it's the robots we should be wary of. He writes "'We are committed to helping victims of robot surgery receive the medical care and compensation they deserve. As both a lawyer and a licensed medical doctor, Dr. Francois Blaudeau has made it his mission to fight for the victims of traumatic complications as a result of botched robot surgery.' That's the opening salvo from the medical malpractice lawyers who run the slick fear factory of a website, BadRobotSurgery.com. According to the doctor-lawyers behind it?doctor-lawyers like Francois Blaudeau, MD, JD, FACHE, FCLM?'thousands of people have suffered severe and critical complications at the hands of surgical robots. In fact, 'robotic surgery has been linked to many serious injuries and severe complications, including death.'

Mel B. joins 'America's Got Talent' as judge

Brendon Thorne / Getty Images file

Mel B. is officially joining "America's Got Talent" as the new judge.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

"America's Got Talent" may have said goodbye long-time judge Sharon Osbourne, who left the show at the end of last season, but they've found a reality TV vet with plenty of stage experience to fill her big shoes: former Spice Girl Melanie Brown.

"This exciting addition of the dynamic Mel B to our lineup of judges promises that fans will see a strong, talented and opinionated woman match up against our equally outspoken judges Howard Stern and Howie Mandel,? said Paul Telegdy, the president of alternative programming for NBC, in a statement Thursday. "Her presence has powder-keg potential for lots of fireworks this summer as the No. 1-rated 'America?s Got Talent' will return with even bigger and more exotic acts than any year before."

The network confirmed in December that shock jock Stern would be returning to judge a second season. The upcoming eighth season of the show will be Mandel's fourth as a judge.

"I?m thrilled to be part of this season of ?America?s Got Talent? and to get to work with Howie and Howard," said Mel B, formerly known as Scary Spice. "It?s so exciting to be bringing some Girl Power to the panel!"

Her reality TV experience includes competing in season five of "Dancing With the Stars," in which she placed second; judging "The X Factor: Australia" for two seasons; co-hosting one season of "DWTS: Australia"; and starring in the Style Network's reality show "Mel B: It's a Scary World."

What do you think of the addition of Mel B. to "AGT"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Lisa Firestone: 4 Steps to Conquer Your Inner Critic

Most of us are familiar with those nagging thoughts that tell us we are not good enough, that cast doubt on our goals and undermine our accomplishments. These thoughts might be there to greet us when we first glimpse at ourselves in the mirror in the morning. "You're so unattractive. You're fat. What a slob. Just look at your hair, hips, waistline, etc."

This inner critic might meet you at work. "You're under too much pressure. You'll never get everything done. No one even notices you. You should just give up."

It's even there to critique your closest relationships. "He/she doesn't really love you. No one could care about you. It will never last. Just don't be vulnerable."

Every person is divided; part of us is goal-directed and self-possessed, while another part is self-critical, self-denying, and even self-destructive. This "anti-self" perpetuates a negative thought process, which my father psychologist and author Robert Firestone refers to as the critical inner voice.

The critical inner voice is formed out of painful early life experiences in which we witnessed or experienced hurtful attitudes toward us or those close to us. As we grow up, we unconsciously adopt and integrate this pattern of destructive thoughts toward ourselves and others. When we fail to identify and separate from this inner critic, we allow it to impact our behavior and shape the direction of our lives. It may sabotage our successes or our relationships, preventing us from living the lives we want to lead and becoming the people we seek to be. So how can we challenge this inner voice? How can we recognize its commentary and differentiate from its directives?

Record-breaking 320-gigapixel panorama of London is a cause for celebration, vertigo

320gigapixel panorama of London

While the Shard might be the new darling of London's skyline, the BT Tower's still got a few tricks up its sleeve -- such as this record-breaking 320 gigapixel panorama of the English capital. In total 48,640 images, shot with four Canon EOS 7D cameras were stitched together to create this 360 vista. Want a little more perspective? The press info claims that if this were a physical image, it would be almost as large as Buckingham Palace -- or in more concrete terms -- 60,000 times larger than an average iPhone photo. Of course, what good would a gigapixel image be without a where's waldo-style hunt? So, UK residents who have a keen eye can try spotting BT's Buzby mascot for the chance of winning some prizes. Us? We're just trying to hunt down a cab. Set your sights on the source for big picture.

BT TOWER BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR PANORAMIC PHOTO
To see the gigapixel image and share your favourite views of London visit: www.btlondon2012.co.uk

An amazing image of London taken from the top of the BT Tower has set a new record for the world's largest panoramic photo. The image shows a full 360 degree view of London in incredible detail.
The 320 gigapixel image, taken by expert photography firm 360Cities, comprises 48,640 individual frames, using four, state of the art Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters, provided by Canon. The cameras were driven by high end Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads, from the Clauss company in Germany. The individual images have been stitched into a single, gigantic panorama over a period of weeks by a powerful Celsius R920 workstation, provided by Fujitsu Technology Solutions Europe.

It is the first time that an image of this magnitude has ever been attempted, and it took several months to create due to the scale of the endeavour. If printed at normal photographic resolution, the BT Tower panorama would be 98 meters across and 24 meters tall, almost as big as Buckingham Palace. In comparison, the last record attempt for a London panorama was 80 gigapixels, taken from Centrepoint in 2010.
The images were taken after the end of London 2012, the first digital Games. Londoners, tourists and those who work in the capital are now being asked to share their favourite views of the capital, as a permanent record of London's year in the global spotlight.

As the official communications services partner for London 2012, BT played a vital role in ensuring the Games were the most connected ever, with millions of people enjoying sharing their experiences of the sporting and cultural action via social media. BT Tower played its part in the celebration, sharing news of every single medal won, live stats and scores on its giant 360 degree LED screen.
Suzi Williams, director, BT Group Marketing & Brand, said, "The BT Tower is such an iconic London landmark, and became a focus for the capital's celebrations in 2012, what better way to capture that remarkable year than with a full panoramic photograph taken from its roof. This isn't just a world record for the BT Tower, it's for London and the people who live, work in or visit the capital. Take a look, and share your favourite London places and landmarks."

Steve Hercher, director, 360Cities, said, "We were honoured to be chosen by BT to attempt this world record panorama and make our own contribution to commemorating the wonderful London 2012 Games. So many unknowns and variables had to be addressed in the planning of this unprecedented shoot, really the first of its kind. Software and hardware were pushed to the limits, and rain, wind and other potential stumbling blocks had to be dealt with. Our photography team of Jeffrey Martin, Tom Mills and Holger Schulze did an amazing job and not a single individual frame from the more than 48,000 planned was missed."

Rainer Fuehres, Head of Consumer Imaging Group, Canon Europe, said: "The goal of empowering people to take the next step on their personal photographic journeys drives every product we create, and this breath-taking image truly takes this philosophy to the extreme. Since its launch, the EOS 7D has caught the imagination of enthusiasts around the world so we were pleased to support such an exciting and challenging project with a camera that so many people are using to capture their own moments of inspiration."

Also, our old friend Buzby is hiding in the gigapixel image too. Find him, and you could be one of three winners in our competition. People are selected at random, the first winner will receive an iPad, a year's free broadband, and a trip to the top of the BT Tower to see the view in person. Second and third place win an iPad. Full terms and conditions, please see http://www.btplc.com/gigapixel/

Prosecutors seek dismissal of latest Skakel appeal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Prosecutors urged a judge Thursday to dismiss Michael Skakel's latest challenge of his 2002 murder conviction, saying the Kennedy cousin's claim that his trial attorney did a poor job should have been raised in an earlier appeal and that many of the issues he cites were previously rejected.

A hearing was held Thursday in Rockville Superior Court. The 52-year-old nephew of Robert F. Kennedy's widow, Ethel Kennedy, did not attend and there was no immediate ruling.

Skakel is serving 20 years to life in prison for the fatal beating of Martha Moxley in wealthy Greenwich in 1975, when they were 15-year-old neighbors. He recently lost a bid for parole after a hearing in which he reiterated his innocence.

Attorneys for Skakel argue in the appeal filed in 2010 that his trial attorney, Michael Sherman, failed to challenge the state's star witness by finding witnesses who later rejected his claim that Skakel confessed to the crime. Skakel, who is seeking a new trial, says Sherman failed to obtain evidence from prosecutors and others pointing to other suspects and failed to object to improper closing arguments.

Sherman has said he did all he could to prevent Skakel's conviction.

Prosecutors say the claim against Sherman should have been raised in an earlier appeal, and contend Skakel is in procedural default.

"He, in the state's view, waived it at that point," said prosecutor Susann Gill. "He waived his opportunity."

Gill also argues that 80 percent of the issues cited, such as the claim about the star witness and improper closing arguments, were denied in an earlier appeal and that Skakel should not be allowed to raise the same issues in an effort to get a different ruling from another judge.

Hubert Santos, Skakel's current attorney, said there was no obligation to file the claim earlier and to do so would have forced him to make inconsistent arguments. He says the defense wanted Sherman's cooperation in connection with an earlier appeal and was awaiting details to emerge of Sherman's tax troubles that would factor into the latest claim.

Sherman served about six months in prison for failing to pay more than $400,000 in income taxes. Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay income taxes.

Skakel's claim argues that Sherman had significant financial problems and didn't devote enough money to retain investigators and expert consultants. Santos noted that his appeal related to Sherman's performance came after he was indicted.

"I don't think there is any procedural default whatsoever," Santos said.

Santos says the issues in the latest appeal are related to the earlier challenge but are not identical. He said some of the rulings denying the earlier appeals lend support to the claims against Sherman, citing a Supreme Court ruling that stated Sherman failed to object to the prosecutor's closing argument.

The victim's 80-year-old mother, Dorthy Moxley, said the appeals are stressful. She did not attend the hearing.

"It just amazes me they have all this energy to keep pushing for these things when they just hit a stone wall every time," she said Wednesday. "I just think it's a big waste of time and money for the state of Connecticut to have to put up with all these appeals. And it's a waste of time and effort and money on my part."

Skakel's attorneys say the state's interest in finality does not trump Skakel's interest in showing he was wrongfully convicted.

"Michael Skakel is an innocent man serving an unjust sentence for a crime he did not commit. Therefore, Mr. Skakel's exercise of his constitutional rights is not a waste of time or money," Santos said.

Skakel already has lost two appeals before the Connecticut Supreme Court.

If the latest appeal is not thrown out, a trial is scheduled to start in April

Obama, business groups differ on minimum wage plan

Chart shows states with minimum wages higher than the Federal wage

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour and tying future increases to inflation will boost the incomes of millions living in poverty and spur job growth by pouring more money into the economy. But business groups are not so sure.

They complain that increasing the federal rate from $7.25 an hour would discourage employers from hiring new workers, hurting the very people Obama aims to help.

Obama pointed out in his State of the Union address Tuesday that 19 states and the District of Columbia already have minimum wages set above the federal rate of $7.25, creating a vast wage disparity across the country.

And 10 of those states make annual cost-of-living adjustments, including Washington state, where workers earn at least $9.19 an hour, the highest minimum in the country.

The plan faces certain hurdles in Congress, as top Republicans, including House Speaker John Boehner, wasted little time dismissing the proposal.

More than 15 million workers earn the national minimum wage, making about $15,080 a year. That's just below the federal poverty threshold of $15,130 for a family of two.

Selling his plan to a crowd in Asheville, N.C., on Wednesday, Obama said it's time to increase the minimum wage "because if you work full time, you shouldn't be in poverty."

Advocates say a minimum wage increase can lead to even broader economic benefits.

"These are workers who are most likely to spend virtually everything they earn, so it just pumps money back into local economies," said Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, a worker advocacy group.

That will trigger spending at small businesses in their communities, stimulating consumer demand and driving economic growth, Owens said.

Economists have long disputed the broader impact of setting a minimum wage. A major 1994 study by labor economists David Card and Alan Krueger found that a rise in New Jersey's minimum wage did not reduce employment levels in the fast-food industry. Krueger now is chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Yet that study has come under fire from other economists, who argue that comparing different states over time shows that raising the minimum wage hurts job growth.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said a higher minimum wage would boost incomes for some poorer workers. But it would also discourage employers from hiring more of them.

"So on net, I am not sure it helps," he said.

William Dunkelberg, chief economist for the National Federation of Independent Business, said the increase would hit businesses hard and only hurt low-wage workers by reducing demand for their services.

"The higher the price of anything, the less that will be taken, and this includes labor," Dunkelberg said. "Raising the cost of labor raises the incentive for employers to find ways to use less labor."

The government first set a minimum wage during the Great Depression in 1938. It has been raised 22 times since then ? the last increase went into effect in 2009 ? but the value has eroded over time due to inflation.

Obama's latest plan would raise the hourly minimum to $9 by 2015 and as well as increase the minimum wage for tipped workers, which has not gone up for more than two decades.

As for states that have already set minimum wages above the federal rate, they range from $7.35 in Missouri to the high of $9.19 in Washington. In 10 of those states ? Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington ? the minimum wage is automatically adjusted every year to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

Women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum-wage workers, while black and Hispanic workers represent a higher share of the minimum-wage workforce than whites, according to the Economic Policy Institute.

The last federal minimum wage increase was signed into law by President George W. Bush, when it increased from $5.15 to $7.25 in a three-step process between 2007 and 2009.

The last recession began in the middle of that process and took an especially heavy toll on middle-wage positions, which accounted for 60 percent of jobs lost in the crushing downturn. Most of the job growth since the 2010 recovery has been in low-wage jobs. Owens, for one, contends, "There's no compelling case to be made that raising the minimum wage triggered job losses."

Doug Hall, director of the liberal Economic Policy Institute, estimates that raising the minimum wage to $9 would pump $21 billion into the economy and lead to the creation of 120,000 jobs.

But Randel Johnson, vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for labor issues, said the increase would come "on the backs of employers," who would hire fewer people and cut overtime.

"You don't put new burdens on employers when they are trying to recover in a tough recessionary time," he said.

Johnson also warned against tying wage increases to inflation.

"Employer profits are not magically indexed somehow to always go up," Johnson said. "Congress needs to look at the validity of raising the minimum wage in the context of the economic times in which it's being proposed."

That concern is expected to drive Republican opposition in Congress. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who delivered the GOP response to Obama's State of the Union address, said Wednesday that raising the minimum wage is the wrong way to help workers increase wages.

"I don't think a minimum wage works," Rubio said on "CBS This Morning." ''I want people to make more than $9 dollars an hour. The problem is you can't mandate that."

Boehner, the House speaker, told reporters Wednesday: "When you raise the price of employment, guess what happens? You get less of it."

The Obama administration points to companies such as Costco, Wal-Mart and Stride Rite that have supported past minimum wage increases. The White House says higher wages help build a strong workforce and lower turnover, improving profitability over the long run.

Second oldest parade in Louisiana hits the streets despite the rain

POSTED: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 5:15pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 6:29pm

Fat Tuesday 2013 came fast and millions of people made their way to Louisiana to celebrate at all of the Mardi Gras parades. The second oldest parade in the state rolled Tuesday and it went off without a hitch, despite the rain.

It was a wet morning all over the state but out in New Roads the rain didn't seem to stop anyone from having a good time. It was the 91st anniversary of the New Roads Parade and people came from all over to join in on the fun.

Beads were being thrown and hundreds of kids were jumping for joy. The New Roads Mardi Gras Parade rolled down the streets in its 91st year.

The weather did not stop the thousands of people, including Russel Harris, from joining in the historic tradition.

"A day like today expecting some rain, if it rains we can run right under the porch for cover and still enjoy Mardi Gras as it passes by," says New Roads native, Russel Harris.

And to some, the New Roads Parade means more than just a Fat Tuesday celebration. Residents in New Roads say that Mardi Gras is more like a birthday party for not only the City of New Roads but for all of Pointe Coupee Parish.

For Alton Warr Sr., this year?s parade will be one he will never forget. "I was the king in 2003," noted Warr Sr.

And now, ten years later he's celebrating as his son walks in his shoes.

"It means the best feeling in the world ad anyone could have as your son follows in your footsteps as a king," says Warr Sr.

So natives like Russel Harris, will enjoy what?s left of Mardi Gras before the countdown until Fat Tuesday 2014 begins.

"Every year, I never miss it,? says Harris.? It's very exciting. It's the place to be during Mardi Gras time."

There was an all-time record this year with more than 50 floats on the route covering a 2 mile stretch. Also over 200 law enforcement officers from the across the state were in New Roads Tuesday morning to help with traffic, parking and safety.

Gay And Lesbian Adoptions Are The New Norm In Quebec

"I would like to have a mother, but I wouldn't want to lose my two dads," says Frida, a radiant six-year-old Canadian girl unaware of the international controversy raging over gay parenting rights.

In Britain and France the debate over gay marriage and parenting has provoked heated debate. But in Canada, a nation born out of their new world colonies, Frida's situation is no longer very unusual.

A gay couple in their 40s adopted Frida when she just a baby.

Cheerful and vivacious she runs wild in the Montreal home of Laurent Demers and his partner Steven LeBlanc, burning off energy before bedtime under the watchful gaze of her doting fathers.

Britain voted on Tuesday to become the 11th country to allow gay couples to marry -- but the reform divided Prime Minister David Cameron's ruling Conservatives and must go before the upper chamber before becoming law.

In France, where the issue has sparked impassioned protests, that National Assembly approved homosexual marriage and adoption only last month.

Canadian gays and lesbians have been tying the knot since June 2005, when a series of court decisions forced Ottawa to legalize gay nuptials on the basis that denying gay couples the right to marry was discriminatory.

Since 2002 Canada's Quebec province has also allowed gay and lesbian couples to adopt children.

"We were the 16th gay couple to adopt a child in Quebec, and the first to be entrusted with a girl," boasts LeBlanc. Frida came home with the couple when she was only two months old, in December 2006.

Two years later, she got an adopted baby brother, Jules, who was only four days old when he was added to the family.

The adoptions were finalized in short order, in part because the couple were not fussy about who they wanted placed with them to be raised.

"Adoptive parents often want 'pink babies,' newborns, beautiful and healthy. It's narcissistic," says Michel Carignan who as chief of Montreal's adoption services from 2002 to 2009 oversaw the first adoptions by gay couples.

"Gay couples, themselves being different, were open to having children who are different, or of other ethnicities, who are older or with special needs due to psychological or health problems," he explained.

"Because of that, they made faster headway with their applications," he said, adding that he is aware of no evidence that being raised by a gay couple rather than a heterosexual couple has any adverse affect on the child.

Today, one in three couples seeking to adopt in Montreal are gay or lesbian, said Louise Dumais, who succeeded Carignan at Montreal's adoption office.

Gay and lesbian adoptions have not faced strong opposition in Quebec, where it is widely accepted now as a new societal norm.

Most of the couples seeking adoption are gay men.

Lesbian couples have mostly turned to artificial insemination to start a family, and since 2010 the province has paid the bill, said Mona Greenbaum, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Family Coalition.

Her organization has helped 1,300 families.

International adoptions are out of the question. No country allows children to be placed with foreign gay couples, says Greenbaum, who is a mother of two boys thanks to insemination at a US clinic.

Some couples have access to surrogacy, which is banned in Quebec but not in neighboring Ontario, but this option is costly -- with fees of up to Can$75,000 charged by agencies in Ontario -- and legally complicated.

It's not always easier for lesbians. Stephanie Recordon and Florence Lagouarde came to Quebec from France in 2003 in order to have children.

After three years of trying they gave up on artificial insemination and turned to in-vitro fertilization. One of Recordon's eggs was implanted in Lagouarde's uterus.

On February 10, 2011, Lagouarde was stunned by the positive result of a home pregnancy test.

Little Markus was born nine months later. His mothers are now eager to try again for a second child, using this same method.

Every gay and lesbian couple interviewed by AFP described their own unique adventures in parenthood.

But they all had one thing in common: at hospitals, daycares, schools or elsewhere their non-traditional families were treated just the same as any other.

Anna is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl with two mothers, Charlotte Semblat and Genevieve Guindon, both sociology professors.

Her friends at daycare, the couple says, "accept it as quite normal" although they are sometimes jealous that Anna has both "a mother and a mommy."

What does Anna say when asked why she has no father? "That that's the way it is!" she asserts, before turning her attention to two toy chipmunks. "A heterosexual couple," Semblat says, of the animals.

Tips For Successful Commercial Real Estate Management | National ...

TIP! Carefully peruse the disclosure statements issued by the real estate agency you intend to hire. Look for any disclosures regarding dual agency.

Whenever you invest, you need to know the type of property that is best suited to your needs. Define your sphere of interest prior to beginning your search. Making a bad decision at this stage could cost you a lot. Keep reading for a handful of ideas and advice for making more informed commercial real estate decisions.

TIP! Check into having an inspector look through your property before you put that property back on the market. If there is anything wrong with your property, have it fixed right away.

When you are buying or selling commercial real estate, always negotiate. It is important that your concerns and opinions are heard and recognized by the other parties; you must always put forth the effort to ensure fair pricing for the commercial property.

Real Estate

TIP! Commercial real estate agents specialize in working with different types of clients. Agents that work with tenants and landlords both are called full service brokers.

Hire a qualified commercial real estate attorney to avoid legal problems later. Because real estate investing is full of unexpected pitfalls and setbacks, you need a savvy professional to cover your legal liabilities.

TIP! Take the neighborhood into account when purchasing commercial property. Purchasing in neighborhoods that are in the upper price per square foot range will help for successful business because the surrounding owners have more money to spend.

When you interview a representative of a prospective real estate brokerage, ask how the company attains most of its profits. They should be up front about what their business model is and any interests that differ from yours. Make sure you understand how they are going to benefit from the transaction that they will take care of for you.

TIP! Don?t underestimate the value of networking with other investors or with private lenders when trying to purchase commercial real estate. The more people in your real estate network, the more likely you are to find opportunities to buy.

Have an understanding on what exactly it is you are looking for when it comes to commercial real estate. Write down the things you like about the property, important features are office numbers, how many conference rooms, restrooms, and how big it is.

TIP! Standard lease forms should not be signed lightly. Larger companies can sometimes slip extra requirements into lease documents, and this can make them longer and more complicated.

If you are considering apartment complexes as your next investment, remember that smaller complexes may be more trouble than they are worth. In fact, many experienced investors recommend only investing in properties with 10 or more units. This general advice may not always apply though. You should decide on buying a property based on your own research.

Commercial Real Estate

TIP! Visit the commercial real estate properties that you are interested in. Bring a contractor along so that you don?t forget to inspect any important features.

As indicated by this article, commercial real estate investments can be lucrative. The three requirements to success in commercial real estate are knowledge, skill and some luck. Not all individuals are destined for success, but with the application of the aforementioned advice, your odds of victory are higher than they would?ve been otherwise.

Canadian who spied for Russia jailed for 20 years

RCMP via Reuters

Naval intelligence officer Jeffrey Delisle is shown in this still image taken from video of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police videotaped interrogation of the confessed spy in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia on Jan.13, 2012. Delisle found himself facing Mountie Jim Moffatt at the RCMP detachment after he was arrested following the interception days earlier of attempted transmissions to the Russians.

By Eric Martyn, Reuters

Published at 7:15 p.m. ET -- A Canadian naval officer who handed over secrets to Russia for more than four years, damaging Canada's relations with the United States and other key allies, was jailed for 20 years on Friday.

Sub-Lt. Jeffrey Delisle, dressed in a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans, showed no reaction when found guilty of breach of trust and handing information to a foreign entity that could harm national interests.

He was also fined $111,817 (Canadian), the sum he received from his Russian spy masters.

Delisle, 41, worked at a security unit in Halifax that tracked vessels entering and exiting Canadian waters. He stole secret information by copying it onto a computer memory stick.

Officials told a sentencing hearing last week that allies had threatened to withhold intelligence from Canada unless it tightened security procedures.

Canada shares sensitive information with the United States, Britain, New Zealand and Australia.

Gen. Tom Lawson, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Canada was boosting security in the wake of what he called Delisle's odious behavior.

"A critical foundation of our intelligence mission is the mutual trust we have forged with our allies ... Sub-Lieutenant Delisle failed each and every Canadian," he said in a statement.

Delisle, unhappy after his marriage started to break up, walked into the Russian embassy in Ottawa in July 2007 and offered to sell secrets.

Authorities first became suspicious after Delisle returned to Canada from a meeting with a Russian handler in Brazil in 2011, carrying tens of thousands of dollars in cash and pre-paid credit cards. This prompted an investigation that ended with the officer's arrest in January 2012.

He was the first person to be charged under a secrecy law that was enacted after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and can carry a life sentence. Prosecutors had demanded a 20-year sentence while Delisle's lawyers argued a 10-year term would be appropriate.

As he left court he glanced briefly at several members of his family in the room.

Defence lawyer Mike Taylor said Delisle "is a little bit shocked. It's a significant sentence that he received and one that quite frankly I don't think he was really expecting."

Taylor told reporters it was too early to say whether an appeal would be lodged.

Delisle was also given nine years in jail for attempting to communicate information to a foreign entity and five years for breach of trust, with all sentences to be served concurrently.

Taking the time he served in pretrial custody into account, Delisle will spend 18 years and five months in jail.

New insight on relationship between parents, preschoolers and obesity

Feb. 8, 2013 ? While sugary drinks, lack of exercise and genetics contribute to a growing number of overweight American children, new research from Washington State University reveals how a mom's eating habits and behavior at the dinner table can influence her preschooler's obesity risk.

The findings come from WSU alumna Halley Morrison's undergraduate honors thesis, which recently was published in the journal Appetite.

As a biology major and student fitness instructor, Morrison knew she wanted to focus on health and the human body. She learned about the childhood obesity and prevention research of Tom Power, chair of the WSU Department of Human Development.

Together, they analyzed surveys of 222 low-income African-American and Latino Head Start preschoolers and caregivers in a U.S. Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service Children's Nutrition Research Center study.

"The problem is no longer food scarcity, but too much food," Morrison said. "It doesn't cost families extra to change their behavior."

Morrison found that moms who eat when they are already full and also show a high level of control when feeding their kids -- for example, by pushing children to finish what's on their plate or withholding food until the next meal -- tend to produce picky eaters. Meanwhile, moms who eat in response to their emotions or who are easily tempted by the sight, scent or taste of food had children with a strong desire to eat.

"Like mother, like child," Morrison said. "This is especially true when kids are so young their environment is primarily based on what their parents are doing."

Nearly 17 percent of U.S. children between ages 2 and 19 are obese. While past research has focused mainly on middle-class European-American families, Morrison said the demographic focus on low-income families made this particular study unique. Obesity rates among preschoolers are highest in African-American and Latino populations: 21 and 22 percent, respectively.

The results from the study suggest a family can alter eating behaviors to reduce obesity risk and associated health problems like high blood pressure, respiratory issues and sleep apnea.

Power said some of these behavior changes can include dishing up smaller portions of food and then giving children more only if they ask. This creates a positive mealtime experience for a child, as he or she feels a sense of accomplishment and is less likely to overeat.

Power said moms who eat based on their emotions or temptation can try to keep unhealthy foods out of cupboards.

"When a preschooler says they are full and still has food on his or her plate, it's important for parents to listen and trust the child," Power said. "Limit the availability of high-calorie low-nutrient foods, like sweets, but don't turn them into forbidden fruits."

It typically takes up to eight exposures to a new food before a child is willing to eat it -- a natural instinct to make sure the food isn't poisonous or dangerous, Power said. Since preschool children tend to get hungry every two or three hours, they might not eat everything on their plate but rather enjoy a healthy snack a few hours after a meal.

As children grow up and begin to make their own food choices, they have a tendency to seek out foods they were not allowed to eat when younger, Power said. Morrison said this could lead them to consume unhealthy foods in amounts that increase their obesity risk.

"It's important for parents to be mindful of their eating practices and how they feed their children," Morrison said. "It will help their kids develop a healthy relationship with food that can then naturally carry over into future generations."

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Starting Thursday, residents here began stocking up on food, batteries, snow shovels, and gasoline. Those lucky enough to have generators don't want to risk running out of gas, which may be as hard to find after this storm as it was after "Superstorm" Sandy.

Thousands of flights have been canceled at Newark and other New York-area airports. The parking lot at the local Stop & Shop was jammed, as people stripped shelves of milk, bread, and bottled water. Tempers frayed and a horn-blowing contest erupted over a parking space-- if the participants had not been senior citizens, fisticuffs would probably have taken place instead.

As of noon, the temperature is hovering around 30 degrees with a steady rain. The rain is expected to change to snow later this afternoon, with an accumulation of six to 12 inches forecast for central Jersey by the time the storm moves out.

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Just over a week since a nightclub fire killed nearly 240 revelers in southern Brazil, Carnival festivities hit full stride Friday, raising questions about the safety of those who will pack party spaces across the nation.

In the days following the deadly blaze at the Kiss club in the university town of Santa Maria, authorities across Brazil increased fire inspections and closed dozens of clubs in many major cities, mostly citing problems with the establishments' paperwork.

But most of the clubs have already reopened ? leading fire experts to say few changes were put in place to really improve safety for patrons.

"Certainly for Carnival, we'll still have many security problems in the clubs, because there is no possibility of having intense inspections in every corner of Brazil, and there was no time to have made necessary adaptations," said Telmo Brentano, an engineering professor in Porto Alegre, capital of the state where the Jan. 27 Kiss club fire took place.

Brentano, an activist for the creation of federal laws on fire safety and author of two books about fire safety engineering, said something positive may come from the blaze that killed 238 people before Brazil hosts the world's two biggest sporting events in the next three years.

"Things will certainly be better than they are today by the World Cup and the Olympics," he said. "The shock of the Santa Maria tragedy was so intense that now patrons of public establishments are more aware of dangers they may face if minimum fire safety standards aren't met. There really was a great awakening on the issue."

City and state officials in Sao Paulo, Brazil's biggest city, and Rio de Janeiro, the center of Carnival where about 500,000 tourists are expected to visit through Wednesday, declined to comment on the specifics of increased fire safety inspections in the past week. Fire officials in Rio de Janeiro said only that their goal is to carry out 40,000 inspections in 2013.

But Brentano and other fire experts said more inspections will mean little because of Brazil's lack of consistent fire laws. Each state enacts its own laws and cities can create their own as well ? and corruption at the state and local levels undermine the rules that do exist, the experts said.

Police say the Santa Maria fire started when a band performing at the club lit a small flare, which ignited flammable soundproofing foam on the ceiling. There was a near-total lack of emergency infrastructure in the club, such as a fire alarms, emergency lights or sprinkler systems. The club had just one working door, and its single fire extinguisher was faulty.

Such conditions are common across South America's largest nation, said Marcelo D'Amico, a native Brazilian fire protection engineer and founder of the League City, Texas-based consulting firm Orcus Fire Protection, who carries out work in Brazil.

D'Amico is not optimistic on the chances of Brazilian nightspots making great strides in fire protection before the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, let alone this year's Carnival.

"I am not talking about the new stadiums and buildings being built or renovated, but of the hundreds of thousands of places ? restaurants, nightclubs, theaters ? that people coming for the two events are going to fill to capacity and that will probably not have proper fire prevention measures in place," he said.

D'Amico said minimum safety features are largely lacking in Brazil, such as illuminated exit signs, sufficient emergency exits and sprinkler systems.

"I've been in high-rises in Brazil with no sprinklers or fire alarms," he said. "I looked for emergency exits and was scared out of my mind when I thought about what could happen if there was a fire."

He accused Brazilian construction companies and building owners of being less concerned with safety codes than with esthetics and budgets.

But D'Amico puts the main blame on politicians, who he said "turn a blind eye to the fact that legislation must be updated and inspectors must go into buildings to make sure fire prevention measures are in place."

The government must adopt a "hard-line fire prevention approach and determine what has to be done and set specific deadlines to make the needed changes," he said.

"The installation of proper fire prevention mechanisms ? sprinklers, alarms, exit doors ? costs a lot of money and building owners are not motivated by spending money. They are motivated by making money."
