Dark Skies is an alien abduction movie about a family trying to make sense of strange occurrences around their house. In a very Paranormal Activity way, the family starts noticing little things around their house like all half eaten piles of food around their kitchen, cups and plates piled, missing pictures, marks on their bodies, and flocks of birds crashing into their house. On top of that, the Barrett?s youngest son Sam (Kadan Rocket) is having nightmares and says he?s being visited at night by The Sandman.
Despite strange happenings that would lead most families to have their house exorcised, the parents (played by Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton) spend a large part of the film scratching their heads and asking questions. ?How many blackouts do you need before you start to realize something strange is happening? ?How many times do you need to see something standing over your child?s bed?
After what feels like the 100th crazy episode, Mrs. Barrett finally does what every person in the world would do ? Google it. Her internet search leads her to local man who thinks the family is being visited by aliens known as The Greys.
Dark Skies clocks in at 1hr 35 mins, but it takes so long for the film to get going making it feel like a 2 hour film. The slow paced isn?t helped by the boring story. There are no original scares, no original looking aliens, and the cookie cutter family consisting of the rebellious son, the innocent son, the parent who accepts what?s happening, and the parent who doesn?t believe.
The ?biggest issues is not how long it took the Barretts to do something about the invasion, or their oldest son?s snore worthy side story about his loser friend and a girl, but the problem is the way in which the family deals with alien abduction. Of all the ?protect my family? scenarios in cinema, the Barrett family in Dark Skies may have dealt with aliens the poorest. The Barrett family prepares like they?re taking on the Mexican Cartel and not extraterrestrials that have entered their house undetected for weeks.
Dark Skies ends with a twist/flashback combo that?s as interesting as doing taxes all night. For what it?s worth, Dark Skies could?ve been good but uninteresting aliens and silly characters make it an X-Files episode that was left on the cutting room floor at best.
